Lime overflowing coolant when opening the expansion tank
Hello, following a walk in I had a micro leak at the level of the expansion tank hose I opened the tank cap and it overflowed a lot and this morning my tank was empty I specify with the engine hot so in normal pressure that it overflows since the maximum level is just below the cap with the expansion of the liquid?
Ok, you open a pressurized coolant system and you are BEGGING to get burned. It is under 15-20psi and will come out like raging lava to burn you. I've had a tank explode due to a hot plate plastic weld failing and have the burns to show.
Basically, the coolant at any temp should be between those two lines. Top it off, then properly bleed it (the bleed screw on tank makes it easier). You introduced a lot of air into the system.
For future reference, these engines can take a few hours to cool down depending on how hard they're driven and the ambient temperature. Before you ever open up the cooling system, touch the hottest part of the engine and if you can keep your hand on it, fine. Better still, use and infrared thermometer on the hottest part of the engine. Best - wait till next morning.
Coolant level is always checked COLD and you will see the MAX and MIN level marks are well below the base of the filler neck:
Topping up should be with a 50/50 mixture coolant/water. My preference is to use de-ionised or distilled water. Coolant specification is WSS M97B44. This is normally coloured orange and called "Extended Life Coolant".
The X150 doesn't normally use or lose coolant so you are right to investigate any loss. Use a Pressure Test Kit to check for sources of leaks.
This is important point to consider moving forward. Air bubbles in the cooling system drastically reduce cooling effectiveness, to the point that the car may start overheating.
Also, if you are not going to take it to the shop, ask them to pressure test the system.
