Default Low Frequency Resonance in Coupe

Greetings!

I am still in my search for a X150 and found a very nice 2011 R Coupe in BRG. However, starting the test drive I almost immediately noticed a very low frequency resonance in the cabin. It did not sound like a wheel bearing, did not change as speed increased, or go away on deceleration, as sometimes happens with mechanical issues. It was just THERE once the car was moving.

Being sensitive to these things, acoustic anomalies whether a drone, buzz or like this resonance, detract from driving pleasure. Yes, I could turn up the audio or fan, but this was so present to me as to move me away from what otherwise seems to be a nice car.

Is this something others have detected in X150 coupes? Could it be a tire thing (Yokahamas, in this case)?

It would be sad to miss out on a car for something easily curable.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

TC

PS: Does anyone really need that much power? It was breathtaking.

How many kilometres/miles on the vehicle?

Has the gearbox been serviced?

NBCat,

The car has 73k miles, and unfortunately no service records available at this time. I have a request in for those, primarily to check if the water pump has been replaced.

Is there are driveshaft carrier bearing that presents in this way as it is on the way out?

With the facelift X150, there are several things that can cause the condition you describe:
  • Worn or deformed tyres that are beyond five years old
  • Worn or damaged engine and or gearbox mounts
  • Worn or damaged propshaft isolators
  • Worn wheel bearings
  • Exhaust resonance or broken hanger(s)
Perhaps it may be best to locate another similar vehicle to drive for comparison.

I'd say that is the exhaust mount, very common and a cheap fix at a weld or exhaust shop,
they are known to crack and need re-welding. Sounds exactly like what you are referring to.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Strange thing about the sound is it seems to resemble the rumble you get when one window is slightly open, and the air energizes inside the car at that low frequency. Can any other coupe owners chime in who have experienced this?

Thanks again.

I replaced a windshield in my young and dumb broke kid days. Whenever that car got over 10 mph the windshield air leaks made a deep WHOOOOOO noise.

The hatch on these cars is huge and can be prone to picking up a flex if some one closes it by just one side all the time.
That could be responsible for some noise.

Most of the noise in my car comes from below the panel that gives you access to the spare tire in the rear.
Hard to tell from a forum post what is normal and what isn't.
My normal noises change with speed and pavement quality.

try slowly rev the engine up in neutral and see if you hear the noise
