Default Lug nuts

hi friends!

I read a lot about problems with the oem jag lug nuts. These are the ones which come with a kind of sheet metal cap, right? I have them still on my XK and actually had to take them off and put back on myself with the latest tire change. It worked fine.

Do I understand correctly that the problem is that they tend to separate and then you can no longer take the wheel of?

so what would be the best way to avoid problems in this department?
New non-jag lug nuts? Which and where get them?

Your description of the nuts is correct...but the problem comes when mechanics use an air wrench on them. That tends to distort the caps and in extreme cases to destroy them. But using a hand torque wrench there is no problem, assuming that the torque values are the correct ones 92 ft lbs, as I remember.some people prefer to replace the nuts with chromed Toyot.a wheel nuts ...I think it is Toyota.

Gregory is correct. Toyota Lugs will eradicate the potential problem. Assuming your new wheels are the flat "Mag style" flush mount and not the acorn shape, you want Toyota Lug nuts 12 x1.5.

The other issue is when a multi Hex socket is used you'll run into major issues

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the OEM Jaguar lug nuts and they will last forever without any problems IF you always use the correct size (19mm) deep socket and hand tools only, and use a torque wrench to tighten them to 92 ft.lbs.

Problems happen when tire jockeys who don't have metric sockets repeatedly use the closest size SAE socket that fits (usually 3/4") together with a power tool with excessive torque to remove and reinstall those lug nuts. That will eventually cause the outer shell of the OEM lug nut to deform and spin on the inner nut, thereby making it difficult to remove.

Don't blame the OEM lug nuts. Blame the lug who used the wrong tools.

Although I bought a set of Toyota lug nuts and related tools, I haven't changed them out yet because my OEM lug nuts are still good.

Thanks all!!! From the reading above the problem might be somewhat less in cars running on this side of the Atlantic in Europe, where we are used to metric tool sizes, right?

Would these fit to my 2011 XK with original Jaguar aluminum wheels, running in continental Europe?

And that's the problem Stuart. Most guys on this forum rely on those lugs in the shop to do it right and no one wants to stand over them and tell them how to do it right. If you have a competent mechanic, you're good. Why stress out over it and risk having to cut them off one day and damage a wheel when $20 solves the problem forever?

At the end of the day it doesn't matter how they stripped, only that they will strip which means the covering shell was a poor design choice.

I agree for the US market because metric isn't the standard, but what about the rest of the world? Do they have the same problem with stripped outer shells? If not, then maybe it wasn't a poor design choice.

Why did Jaguar engineers choose the more expensive 2-piece design instead of a solid lug nut? What are the advantages that made it worth the additional cost? Longevity? Or planned obsolescence so they could sell more replacement lug nuts? Anyone know?

I may be talkin’ out of my **** here, but I thought I recalled reading in another thread, that they could use a harder steel, which isn’t as pretty, and then cover them so they looked nice.

In 36 years of car driving/ownership I have NEVER 'dropped mine off at the shop' and left when any work tyres or brakes are required, I always wait.

I also always have insisted that the nuts are removed and tightened by hand, only if I am throwing the nuts away (due to corrosion or else changing to a different colourway of wheels) will I let them use impact/airtools to removed. So my take on this is it's actually the owners fault for not being more specific/demanding.

So no stripped/seized nuts from this owner to date

If only everyone had time to wait for car repairs. Sometimes the car has been in the shop waiting for parts. I guess I should just bring a sleeping bag with me?

I have few hobbies apart from my cars, also benefited from having worked my way up the ranks, to 8 weeks paid leave plus public holidays. In 35yrs of working I've only had to work a dozen weekends (when auditors were due in on the next).

I appreciate stateside, unless your self employed, you don't even get half of that, also that weekend working is normal, so you guys may have less free time to play with.

As they say don't blame the player blame the game

Yes Her, they will fit. The pitch is correct (12) and the length is correct 1 1/2 inches. As long as your current lugs are flat against the rim (Mag style) you are good to go.

Yes, they'll fit but how will you put them on and get them off? Your OEM Jaguar breaker bar fits the 19mm OEM Jaguar lug nuts but It won't fit those larger Toyota lug nuts. You'll need to buy a Toyota breaker bar or other socket and handle to fit.

If you had read the link in my post #6, above, you would have already known the answer to your question. And where to buy the new tools you'll need.

I have a complete tool kit wrench set with all usual metric nut sizes. Thats what I used two weeks ago to remove my wheels with original lug nuts. Even if these toyo size lug nuts have a slightly different size I guess I just need the correct nut size for my wrench.
