Default Need quick and dirty info on 2010 XK

Sorry for the hurried post. We have owned 2 XJ6's and the wifes daily is a 2002 VDP. Current brood is a 2005 Rangie HSC, 2008 Porsche C4S and a 1990 Testarossa. Im the mechanic in the family and she wants to ditch the VDP. After 120k miles of ownership and changing every hose and component of the coolant system, Im on board with a new car. Especially since there are no more kids in the house. That 'Octopus' hose next to the firewall was a bear to swap out.

Wife sent me a link to a 2010 XK for $35k and 25K miles. She wants to go drive it in the AM because its local and perfect color combo.

I know every make/model has their skeletons but I dont have time to fully educate myself here on the particulars of this year. BTW, Land Rover gave me a 2015 XK for a loaner.....I loved it in every way. A perfect GT car.

My normal MO is to get a PPI, hook it up to a factory computer to see any stored codes and check for paint thickness/frame straight etc.

If there is anything else inherent to this year please let me know. Im looking for deal killers but not not lack of options types of things. IE: 'dont get a 2010 because the tranny is prone to failure!'.

Thank you for your responses and I appreciate the support. If you search my posts, Ive made some contributions regarding leather restoration etc. Forums are a give and take, I always try to give back to the collective knowledge.

Christian

Jaguar XK/XKR (X150): PH Buying Guide | PistonHeads

If you can swing the R I'd strongly recommend it. Either way you can't go wrong. Probably one of the best values out there.

Dash pulling/shrinking
a/c drain hose clogging
water pump failures/cam chain issues on a few 5.0's
penchant for good, strong batteries
speeding tickets
hard to see thought the panties and bras thrown at you
ok, made the last one up.

Fly a Lear 60? Up early or late?

There is nothing to worry about codes, or paint thickness. These were white glove delivery so none of that repaint hanky panky.

Its too much money for a Non R. Its worth it, but you will regret not spending the extra 8K.

Make sure the engine sits overnight, listen to it startup with hood open- let the dealer start it up. If you hear any chain rattle- it will tell you wrong oil was used and its time for a new chain. Deduct 3k from the price for it, or have them do the service.

You can buy an R model with similar mileage for that price. So, either offer $5000 less or look further.

Thanks guys.

Chain rattle on start from cold, gotcha.

Fly c2c, I used to fly a LR60. I keep the same screen name on various forums....helps me remember so I dont have a million screen names. Been flying GIV's since 2002.

Tberg, please throw some leads my way as Im coming up with nothing south of $40k. It has to be a coup, white tan or white with ivory. It seems that most used XK's are in convertible form or the wrong color. Last one that fit our criteria was a 2009 for $36k and 28,000 miles and it sold before we could lay eyes on it.

Thanks again.

Look here is a infinitely better car for 5k more than the car you were looking at.
He will take $40.
Its from a private party and it s the ORIGINAL owner.
It has a feature your wife will not want to live w/o Backup Camera
Its portfolio edition to boot.
The wheels alone are worth the 5k difference.
Its 2013!!
It has half the miles and years!! in other words you are getting twice the car. And it is under warranty I believe.

Thanks Q&C but wrong color combo. We are going to take a peek at the one she found before we go out on a date tonight. Sometimes you pay a premium to get exactly what you want.

I just browsed the Buying Guide article and this caught my eye --
"The 300hp XK covered 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds and the 420hp XKR needed only 4.9 seconds.
In 2009, out went the 4.2 V8s and in came a 385hp 5.0-litre V8 with rotary gear selector like that of the XF. It lowered the 0-62mph time to 5.2 seconds, while the 510hp XKR managed 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds"

There is only 0.1 sec difference between the old and the new R's, despite the 90hp difference. That's kind of disappointing.

Drive one, you'll know better than to believe everything you read. Numbers are not always the whole story.

Traction , traction , traction. That is the thrill of the 5.0L R . The downside is tires , tires and more tires.

For the money you will be spending, make sure you get the color combo and car that you want. Don't settle. There are even super low mileage cars out there, but you might have to travel to get the right one. It's worth it.

Thanks gents. Sorry for the late reply as im on the road. She felt claustrophobic in the XK. Understandably as she drives a Vanden Plas and my fullsize Range Rover. Kinda killed me as I loved the car, what a great sexy machine. I almost bought one a few months ago. BTW I loved the car hands down! It will happen when I clear some finances as its one of the few cars that hits all the right buttons for me. She will drive it just like she wants to take over the RR.

Thanks again

ferrariPete, hey man. Another Fchat guy! If you are ever local with the BB lets swap for a few miles.

Wolfy, Im in Bell Canyon....West Hills SFV.

Jags have always been snug or 'cozy' inside. The XJL is a big car with big wide door sills but doesn't feel big inside; whereas inside a similar-size S-Class it's positively palatial. It's the same with the XK8, XK, and F-Type... all big cars with smallish, compact interior. Maybe it's just the Jaguar design philosophy.
A small interior doesn't make me feel claustrophobic, but tiny windows and big pillars in today's 'coupe-shaped' cars do.

For the sake of other guys that may have this problem with their other halves- and my friend did too.

The following rationale is needed: Its all about getting past the first thing we see, we first learn to appreciate wine when we get past the bitterness, blue cheese when we get past the nose.

Its always been the job of a man to convince a woman of all our silly pursuits. And look, introducing them to wine certainly paid big time dividends. Imagine how hard it was for the first guy who bough home a piece of blue cheese and said honey you gotta to try this. Shame on us if we cant come home with a $100,000 car and convince them to like it.

A pilgrims path is never easy, dont forget the other side is slowly trying to walk us to a spacious minivan- one small step at a time.

We came out of a small Ferrari 308 GTB which my bride didn't care for due to it's tightness inside. When we went looking for another jag we 1st looked at the F-type which in a convert even though it was tight she didn't mind. We sat in a F-type coupe and it took 30 seconds before she bolted out due to it being cramped. Then looking at the XK she didn't have to much of an issue with the coupe but when we tried a convert she was sold and it was just a matter of finding the right color. So it all goes back to a matter of taste and there is no right or wrong answer on car selection as it is a personal issue. Just my 2 cents.

My wife is small, and she likes small cars (her previous cars - Toyota Celica, Acura Integra). She won't drive the XK, because 'it's too big'!

Don't get me wrong, she loves the car (and even named it). She just prefers to be the passenger (which is fine by me ).
