Default No cut Key to copy, need replacement

So I picked up my '11 xk but the seller had only a rather beat-up keyless fob, which works but I have no blade/cut key to use in the locks if worse comes to worse. With no key to copy is the key something a locksmith can make or is it only available via a dealer with the VIN? Or just what is it going to take to get me an emergency key and or a new key fob? If the dealer is the only option, I'll be getting in touch with them Monday, but I am a little nervous without having a cut key. I need a second fob but right now getting a new key is my priority.

The dealer has access to the code for the key, if they provide the VIN and can order the new key. And the fob, for that matter.

My dealer sends the VIN to England where they cut it and mail it directly to your residence. ($100 USD). The fob is a dealer item that is programmed by them via the SSD. ($150 USD). A cheap Chinese copy, from Amazon or Ebay,($25 USD) is good just for the jacket to switch to the original fob, keeping the original guts of the fob.

I saw just the cases for sale on Amazon too. I'm a bit frugal so I'm thinking of buying a pair of fobs there with keys, getting the code from the dealer, and find a locksmith (cheaper?) to do the programming and cut the keys. From what I've now read that seems possible but finding a reliable locksmith might be the challenge. Maybe it's just easier to go to the dealer? I am a little nervous and very protective of the FOB... but not driving the car much just now I m not in a big hurry.
But tell me if there would be a big advantage to just using the dealer? Thnx.

I'd be curious, and this is to everyone. My primary FOB (lucky to have two, but one sucks the battery dry in weeks) is beat to ****. Like huge chunks just missing from the black body part.
The reason I haven't done the cheap chinese body swap is that it is missing the Jag logo.
Outside of buying used, which is fairly pricy, are there any places that throw copywrite to the wind and produce one with the Jag logo?
I'd guess the answer is no. But figured I'd' throw a hail mary out there.

Here's a nice used OEM Smartkey with the Leaper logo on the back. At $65, it's a bit's pricey if all you need is the back shell. It has the electronics, but no emergency key blade. It hasn't been "divorced" from the vehicle, but should be reprogrammable if you have SDD.

Just to add a thanks to everyone! Much appreciated. I'll have this sorted by new years - I hope. I am going to just go through the dealer, the two locksmiths I was able to get in touch with would end up charging me about the same and I like the assurance (?) the dealer can get things done right. I am too nervous not having a backuo though it seems unlikely I'll ever need it...

Yeah dang, I'll save the listing but $65 is right on that cusp of 'worth it' just for the shell. I'd probably just chuck the electronics. If I were to need to replace one of my two keys, I'll spring for the OEM FOB from the dealer and repair/program the new/old one as a pair myself.

A long time ago I got the key code from the dealer and tried to get someone to cut it, that was problematic. Finally I got a guy who did a good enough job on one of the two cuts, but he messed up on the other side. SO I do have a key that works only in one orientation. Still works though. Cost was like $35, paid $20 cuz the messed up side. I supplied the blank.

For me, I want the embossed Jag logo. Chinese knock-offs with no logo are everywhere.

I saw this on another forum which may work but it just appears to be the cover without the chrome ends (no key). It's only a view from the front but you could contact them by email to ask if it is embossed with the jaguar on the other side. Seems reasonably priced but not sure what shipping would cost.

They also list the back cover for just over 10 quid.

I'm pretty sure any Jag dealer will be able to supply parts for the fob. Silver rings part # C2P15136

Once you get two good ones it might be worth getting a couple Silicone fob covers .They have Jag logs and look like an original part..They look good and protect the fob
dead cheap off EBay and last a long time.Had mine for 5 or 6 years and still look as good as new

With regards to covers, I tried a leather one with my daily and fell in love.
its a bit of a b*tch to get on, but fits snugly and protects the FOB well.

as always, your money your choice. But thought I’d throw it out there:
12 bucks on Amazon.

I got these mainly due to getting tired of constantly needing to replace the side chrome pieces which often cracked or the chrome paint chipped. No worries about that now.
