Default oil filter size

what type of wrench fits the XK150 oil filter best? I have various old wrenches but they are difficult to fit in the limited space around the filter.

Yeah, good luck. I had to special order one for my 5.0 through NAPA since there were zero anywhere near me. The one I received, although supposedly the "Right" size, rounded out while using. I had to wrap metal tape around the filter housing to remove it. Yours, on the other hand, is easily accessible from below and removable with any manner of strap wrench which gets small enough. A screwdriver and a hammer will also work.

It is a small area, I did use a rubber strap wrench to get it on the full 3/4 turn.

In 50 years I've never used any kind of wrench to tighten any kind of spin-on oil filter and I've encountered some which were are lot more inaccessible than any of the X150's or X100s. Hand tightening is always sufficient.

I tried the "fitted wrench end" last oil change. It's a weird angle for me so I'm using a silicone pot holder to grip and hand tighten. Works. Wife doesn't know. That works too:-)

Like Richard, I hand tighten a new filter after first smearing some clean oil on the threads and the rubber seal.

The XK 4.2 is awkward to access and, despite hand tightening, I found the filter would be seriously difficult to loosen at the following oil change. I used a chain wrench for this although a strap wrench is likely to be equally effective.

The XK 5.0 is a lot easier with the filter housing on top of the engine although it requires a fluted wrench.

The problem doesn't stop there. My XK and F-Pace have different sizes!

Graham

Also you can use a sheet of coarse sandpaper to get a better grip.

Yeah, fluted wrench. That’s what I use on my 4.2, although it did take me a couple of tries to find the right size.

I always use Mann + Hummel filters which are made in Germany.
With my supplier, if I purchase a pack of 10 or more filters they threw in the filter removal tool for free.

I use the same MANN filter as above (W713/29).
I bought the following fluted wrench on Amazon:

Fits the filter:
