Default oveheated differential

I have a 2009 XKR and the rear wheels froze completely . the car was towed into dealership where I was told that there was a slow leak of a gasket and all differential oil was lost whuch caused differential to overheat....is this a common problem for 2009 XKR ?

Wow, that is uncommon on any car.

That is shocking! I guess this is why it's important to park in the same parking spot every day and keep an eye out for leaking fluids.

It was a recurring problem in early Cadillac CTS sedans; a small number of owners had the rear wheels seize *while at speed* but fortunately, no fatalities. GM issued a recall and offered an extended warranty for the replaced differentials. Seizure was blamed on faulty pinion seal that resulted in diff fluid leak.

I assume they are replacing the entire differential?

Yes it was quite shocking... I don't know if there is a way of cheking this, other than parking in the same spot and verifying the area for oil leaks. It is still under warranty. Thank you for your comments.
