Default Parting is such sweet sorrow

It is a sad time in our lives when we are contemplating selling our 2008 XKR Portfolio convertible and buying something more practical. My quandary (other than we really love the car and hate to part with it) is how to best find a buyer who appreciates a great example of a very special car.

When we tried to sell our XJS a few years back, we tried Cars.com and craigslist but got only wholesalers and scams, no real buyers. We ended up putting the car on consignment at the local Jag dealer. It sold, but the commission was high.

Does anyone have any recommendations based on success stories selling such a vehicle?

I just sold my Mini Cooper on consignment with a local used car dealer. They took 10% of the sales price. I think they got a little more than I could have gotten, and it was real simple on my end. It was more than trade-in value, about the private sale value.

You can always take it to CarMax and they will give you cash, but I don't think you will happy with that price.

You could try this forum's classified section, frequented by other Jag owners that may be interested, or know someone that is.

Post exact details of the XKR and lots of photos. I mean lots of photos 40 to 50. A good photo can really make these cars look great. Also pricing will be the key to any sale, and determine a bottom line price as you will receive offers below our asking price.

Try to assemble all or any paperwork on the cars history. Advertise on Autotrader and pay the extra fee to post extra photos and don't rule out an eBay Motors ad.

Marketing the XKR is the key to a successful sale. Now is the time to list it before winter in your area approaches.

When I was shopping for my car, I frequently checked autotrader and cars.com. I suggest you post the carfax. People like to see the car history and see for themselves that the car hasn't been abused.

Yes, I actually found my car through cars.com or cargurus.com (don't remember which), listed by a dealer. Another car, first choice based on car mileage, was sold before the private owner returned my call. So a good car, at the right price, will sell quickly.
