Hi folks just thought I’d share. hopefully my sorry tale will help someone at some stage.
2009 Xkr, let’s go on the motorway. Flames and grey smoke out the exhausts. Restricted performance and eventually dies. Multiple misfires & bank 1 cat codes
Order 8 coils and 8 plugs, while pulling the plugs find one soaking with petrol.
Jammed open fuel injector in 1 cylinder…engine, cat and exhaust flooded with petrol.
Pull injectors and majority have bad spray pattern. Badly coked
Replace 8 injectors.
Remove bank 1 cat and clean (never again)
Engine flush twice, 14 litres of new oil, new oil filter…get rid of petrol in the crankcase
Car runs lumpy and misfires on cold start, Eml and misfire codes. Clear codes until Car heats up and runs beautifully. The new injectors and plugs make her pull better than ever.
Evap system checked
Mafs checked
All air intake checked
02 sensors checked
Fuel pumps pressure good.
Me not so good…
Today I checked the fuel trims.
Looks like the long term trim still thinks there’s a problem on start up and overfuels….closed loop / open loop
Reset car and ecu, discharged all systems. Reconnected and it fired as it should. Trims look ok.
Test tmrw morning when I cold start….
Pray for me 🙏
Keep those injectors clean, stick a bottle of wynns or similar in the tank regularly.
Don’t be me…
Just checking here because there is a difference....
Is this a 2009 4.2 or 5.0?
Regardless, sucks a lot.
And, why Never Again on the cat clean? Huge mess?
I think my cat on the side where my injector putzed out is a bit... questionable. I had a "Catalyst under performance" or whatever it is DTC. It went away by itself after a spirited long drive. Maybe I burned it all out.
I had a CAT warning and coils or ignition, cleared both, went on a 60 min drive (after just a couple of very short runs after a winter in storage) and everything was good, fault didn't come back. However mine is the 4.2 XKR
Cold start this morning lumpy and overfuelling, eml
Fuel pressure too high, intake system was all checked but I’ll go through it again.
trims we’re good yesterday not today
when it’s warm it runs fine
ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSORS
The ECT sensors are NTC (negative temperature coefficient) thermistors that allow the ECM to monitor the engine coolant temperature.
There are two identical ECT sensors installed, which are identified as ECT 1 and ECT 2. Each sensor is secured with a twistlock and latch mechanism, and is sealed with an O-ring. A two pin electrical connector provides the interface between the sensor and the engine harness.
ECT 1 is installed in the heater manifold, at the rear of the RH (right-hand) cylinder head. The input from this sensor is used in calibration tables and by other systems.
ECT 2 is installed in the lower hose connector which attaches to the bottom of the thermostat. The input from this sensor is used for OBD2 diagnostics and, in conjunction with the input from ECT 1, to confirm that the thermostat is functional.
I’ll look at both of them. Thanks for the help.
Engine coolant temp sitting about 80-90 when warmed up.
the car is only throwing misfire codes, not one sensor code through all of this nightmare.
Coolant temp at 24 when at rest. Comes up as normal on the data stream
both cats come up to temp together
trims are good again
hope I’m not chasing a piston ring.
Hi, hope this conclusion helps someone…
As the posts above, one of the fuel injectors let go, flooded 1 cylinder, multiple misfires and the car died.
replaced 8 coils, plugs and injectors. Cold start car still misfiring, rattling and restricted performance. Clear codes, start and eventually she runs fine.
turns out when the car lost 7 cylinders it also lost mapped start up timing, tensioners are now shot, so full chain, guides and tensioners required. lucky that I still have a working engine
As now car runs lumpy on start up and eventually vvt sorts it out.
problem solved.
Known issue on the hydraulic tensioners
hi George.
going in to Ali Macmillan. Finally found someone who can look after it.
always work in progress to bring it back. 😂
Macmillan get a very good name , all the guys from the jaguar drivers club and jaguar enthusiasts club use them been going over 50 year , car is in good hands
