Default rear fender mud guard

sorry, don't know the correct term but I just noticed this different placement...anyone know if it was a mistake or something else? My 2008, with 20" wheels

is mounted rearward

Known as a Wheelarch Spat (see item 14):

The same as mine.

Out of interest - did all XKs and XKRs come with these spats? They're listed on my car's build sheet looking like an option.

It some time since I read it but I recall it was a Construction & Use design requirement because the wheel protrudes slightly beyond the rear wing. My 2005 XK8 had the same spats although earlier model years did not.

My 2006 XK didn't have them.

My 2008 xkr doesn't have it. (and I'm glad about it, it's ugly).
Maybe that's an american thing.

What size wheels were equipped on your car from the factory?
I seem to recall reading that the spats were equipped on an XKR if it had 20” wheels. None for the XK.

I'd been wondering about that myself - whether the original wheels dictated the spat. Presumably, it would be the width of the tyre that matters - 285mm in the case of a 20" rim - and so an XK (i.e. non-XKR) would get them if originally specified with optional 20" wheels.

07 xkr has them... I think it finishes off the wheel arch on her behind. It is ever so slight... when installed correctly @wymjym .

Ok, so not limited to the XKR. 20” wheels appears to be the criteria.

YES - I think wheel size was the determining factor.

My 2005 X100 and current 2014 X150 both had OE 20 inch wheels and spats. My 2006 XK with 19 inch wheels didn't have them. All of these are NA so 'R' versions wasn't the reason.

Related to the question in the first post: of course the mud guards need to be placed rearwards (behind the wheel/tire), if it should make any sense.

I should have read the question more carefully and/or looked at the photo more closely.

thanks for the clarification...I kept scratching my head trying to determine how that placement made sense.

My car had them fitted incorrectly and this has caused serious corrosion where the securing steel clips have ben placed on the aluminium rear quarter panels.
If fitted correctly, the spats have rubber tabs that keep the clips away from the alloy body panel. There are no tabs where the clips sit against the plastic rear bumper.
Wrong position:

Correct position:

I took this photo with the liner removed to illustrate the filler tube but it also shows the correct spat position and fixing clips.

I have the 20" Senta wheels and no trace of these spats.

Tiepolo,

(forgive the British humour - I have no intention or wish to offend. père Noël = Santa Claus and I couldn't resist asking the question .....)

Did you get the Santa wheels for Christmas?

I think that is probably true because the only time I have ever had them on a salvage that I bought were both on xkr's while none of the xk's had them.
