Default Rear wheel well trim

I've noticed the new XKs at the Jaguar showroom have the black plastic trim on the rear wheel wells. I'm not sure if it is standard on the new cars. I priced them at about $100 for both pieces with the clips. I thought it might help protect the rear quarter from dirt and chips and didn't look bad. Has anyone seen them and what are your thoughts?

Are you referring to the little black plastic 'eyelids' over the rear wheel arches? Those are standard on all XKRs (5.0s, at least - not sure about 4.2s). They're mostly there to meet regulations about projection of tyres beyond the bodywork, but I guess they help protect the panel too.

Agreed, earlier XK8's had a similar piece when the larger BBS wheels were fitted. I've sold a few sets of these this year, our price is $50 + Shipping for the set. interestingly the XKR-S uses a different partno.. Maybe they protrude even further..

They are also on the 2009 XKR 4.2L, as I have them in my car.

It's a nice added touch and provides some minimal protection to the rear quarter panels.

$50.00 for the set from SNG Barrett would be a good price and worth doing a DIY installation of the mouldings.

Is the part number the same for the 2010 XK as for the 2010 XKR? Is the install pretty much just slipping the clips over the molding to hold it in place? I happen to like the look. Richzak.....do you have any pictures in your archive with the trim on your car? Thanks.

Hope this helps and is what you have seen. The trim does not stick out to far, just enough to be able to see and create a nice effect when looking from the rear end.

Default No Car Washes

Don't take your XKR with the rear wheel lips to the car wash. The brushes pull off the clips. Jag dealer said very common for those who use a automatic car wash.

I wouldn't take mine to an automatic car wash anyway - learned that the hard way with scratch patterns on my XJ-S. I take the 75 to a nice bunch of Albanian guys who like the car and do a good job of cleaning it.

I replaced them, because they are ugly.

In Germany this parts are necessary, because there is a rule that the wheel does not have to look more than ???? centimeter over the rear quarter panels.

May be I have to put them back when the German TÜV (1st time after 3 years, then every 2 years) does not give me the stamp on my licence plate which allowes me to drive the car in Germany.

I hope that they (TÜV and the police) dont know this little parts on a XKR.

I suspect the TÜV will not even realise the trims should be there. They're mandated by European Union Council Directive 78/549/EEC of 12 June 1978:

"The wheel guards must be so designed as to protect other road users, as far as possible, against thrown-up stones, mud, ice, snow and water and to reduce for those users the dangers due to contact with the moving wheels… In the part formed by radial planes at an angle of 30º to the front and 50º to the rear of the centre of the wheels, the overall width of the wheel guards must be at least sufficient to cover the total tyre width taking into account the extremes of tyre/wheel combination as specified by the manufacturer..."

Basically, the segment of the wheel from about 1 o'clock back to 10 o'clock on the right side and 11 o'clock on to 2 o'clock on the left side must not stick out past the bodywork.

Meh, I can live with the EU rule, having followed people with extended rims & tires (but standard arches) chucking crap at my car.
