The rear glass repair is done from the outside, with the top up and engine off. Lock the doors and keep your Smartkey in your house so you don't activate Convenience Mode and your battery doesn't drain.

Buy a CTEK and stop worrying about your battery.

Thanks so much Stuart. I just wasn't sure if the repair would be OK with the top up and fully latched because of tension on the material.

I will keep the key away to keep the battery charged.

Hi Red,

I just wasn't sure if the repair would be OK with the top up and fully latched because of tension on the material. With the top partially down I was not sure if the battery would not drain and if the car would be properly locked to prevent the battery drain which I understand is an issue with this model. So I guess it should be all the way up and latched.

That's how I did mine, but my top was in good shape with very little shrinkage of the canvas around the rear glass. Forum members whose tops shrunk around the glass had to partially lower the top to be able to have enough canvas to stretch and glue to the glass. Hopefully, your top hasn't shrunken much.

If you have a CTEK or other quality battery maintainer, you should use it while you're doing the repair just to make sure that you don't run down the battery. Unless your X150 is a daily driver at highway speeds for at least 20 minutes (to keep the battery fully charged), you should use a battery maintainer. All sorts of electrical gremlins happen when the battery isn't fully charged. A CTEK or similar battery maintainer is a cheap investment to avoid problems.

OK, I'll look into the C-TEK charger. With the battery so well hidden away, where does one hook it up for easy/daily access?

This is definitely a weekend car for me.

Budster,
Your 2010 XKR has a Battery Management Module attached to the negative battery terminal. For that reason, never attach an auxiliary negative battery cable (jumper, charger, maintainer) directly to the battery negative terminal. Instead, attach that negative cable to a chassis ground.

I attached my battery maintainer to the remote battery terminals instead of directly to the battery. The remote positive terminal is under a vented black plastic cover on the left side of the trunk. Remove that cover and it's easy to see because it has a red plastic cover. The negative remote battery terminals is a bolt in the spare tire well, near the latch mechanism.

Details of how I wired my maintainer is in this old thread. It's not a CTEK, but the hook up is the same. I have a CTEK MUS4.3 on my 2013 XJ and prefer it over my old BatteryMinder, which still works.

Unfortunately, the photos I posted in this old thread are no longer there. But the text should help.

I'll add, in addition to what Stuart stated, it's best practice to make your connections for charging "first" before plugging the CTEK into a power source.. I walked the "extra mile", and installed my CTEK on the side panel of my vacant tire well. The charging side I followed Stuart' advice, picking up point sin the trunk side panel area. For power I added a marine grade male receptacle with cover in the rear exterior Valance. it is out of site when viewing from behind.
As for the top, I too, left the top in position as I could se shrinkage was minimal. Since most all of my separation was in or just to the side of the window, I stuffed a swim noodle between the rear shelf and glass to support the glass when applying the "clampits" and wood paddles.
If need, I can add details on both these projects. YES, RHINO GLUE ROCKS!

A swim noodle is not just for swimming! As you can see, my rear glass repair is still holding up well.

Default swim noodle buoyancy

Hey Stuart, great idea! Do you have one on the other side to keep her upright in the drink? LOL

A Jaguar doesn't need a swim noodle ...

OK, thanks I'll look into the C-Tek. Wow, lots of CTEK models on Amazon.

Also, unrelated, I tried to pass a smog inspection today and failed the last part. The mechanic said to drive for 20 - 100 miles on the freeway and try again. The joys of living in California.

Thanks so much Ken. Once I Get my stuff delivered, I would love to see how you did it. Should be in a couple of days or so.

Does it matter which C-TEK I get?. I'm in a temperate climate in Southern California.

Well, there are a couple different models, each has more bells and whistles than others.

CTEK MUS 4.3

Although the namesake of the brand didn't have a model designation, that tough, old Jaguar is no pussycat so he must be an XKR!

I ended up getting a C-TEK this is the model. I think it will come from Amazon tomorrow. Looks like a good one from the reviews and specs.

CTEK 40-206 MXS 5.0

Default Old Glue removal

Hi There,

I was just wondering what you used to remove the old adhesive? On the glass I was just going to use a razor blade, but off of the canvas I'm not sure what to use.

Just scrape off as much as you can. You'll have better control using an X-ACTO razor knife than a razor blade.

OK, sounds like a plan. Now if California will stop prohibiting the 3M single step primer that comes with my order I will be all set.

Thanks Stuart. My cat got a new set of Hankook paws this week.

I used these 3M products on my first attempt and the glass separated from the canvas shortly thereafter. I do not recommend using them.

This worked for me. No primer required.
