Hi. I would welcome some advice and guidance, please. I'm a bit stuck. One of my rear quarterlights was failing to rise, while the other one worked fine. I could hear the motor running and the thrashing noises of a broken cable, so I took out a mortgage and bought a genuine new unit from Jaguar, which comes without the glass. It seems a big job to replace one of these so I am pacing myself, and at least the car can be used all the time I am on with the job. I have read and watched as much as I can find about this job on this forum and on YouTube, and have been following the instructions in the Service Manual at 86.25.11 and have got as far as trying to remove the loose regulator upward through the slot. So far without success. I have wound in the top mounting/adjustment bolt as far as it goes which increases the clearance, but not enough.

Is this because the glass is right at the bottom of its movement range, instead of at the top as shown in the illustrations. If so, how can I get it out, please?

Do I need to dismantle the regulator in situe, e.g. by removing the motor or the glass, if either is possible?

Any advice would be welcome, please.

 

Get the glass to the top of the movement range to extract. Use heavy duty wire cutters if necessary to cut the drive cable if it is tangled and the glass cannot be raised.

 

Thanks, JagWrangler, I will try to pull the glass up now I know that's where it needs to be! I THINK its free of the broken cable - I hope so, as cutting that would be beyond my very limited manual strength nowadays. But I can always get a helpful son-in-law to give assistance.

As you know, I already have your remote and one-touch upgrade kits, and am delighted with them. I would highly recommend them to anyone thinking of buying.

 

There was no way the glass was going to move up, and no way I could remove the regulator with the glass down. In the end, the only solution I could find was to remove the motor assembly with the regulator free, but contained in its workspace. Tricky, but not impossible. Once I had got the motor and broken cable out, the regulator came out upwards as sweet as a bird.

And then it was possible to fit the old glass to my new regulator in the upward position, and (eventually) wiggle the whole assembly back into position.

Just about the trickiest bit of fitting I've ever had to do, saving a lot of very expensive dealers-time, so the reward is a great sense of achievement, and admiration for the designers who managed to do the three-D layout drawings to get it to go. I suspect it ended up as a suck-it-and-see design exercise.
