Default smart key...dumb question

On my new 2007 XK I figured out your supposed to put the key in the little receiver when it says it doesn't recognize an "authorized key" or something like that. So I put it in there but couldn't pull it out. then about a minute after I shut off the car it seemed to spit it out. Can someone tell me how this works. Also do you think my fob has a low battery? I don't why the car didn't seem to see it?
-Thanks

I have the same issue with my keyfob. what I do to avoid this issue, is every time I approach the car I push the unlock button whether or not the car is locked. Seems to make the car recognize the keyfob right away. As to the little cubby hole, when you shut off the car, just push it down lightly and the car will spit it out, it seems to lock it in place while the car is running.

And yes, put in a new battery.

Yes, the fob battery is low.
The center console slot will not charge a battery... It is just a transponder, and the very close proximity of an inserted fob is often just enough for the car to validate that it is indeed an authorized key (and buy you a little time to replace the battery).

Keep a spare fob battery (offhand, as I recall it's a CR2032) in your glove box. Buy that brand-name battery from your local drug store and check the expiration date. There are too many Chinese-made fakes on eBay and Amazon.

I posted similar advice previously on this Forum.

I had little intermittent problems like that long before I got the official "smart key battery low" warning. Since replacing my fob batteries I've had no further problems.
