Stopped in for an oil change and got a list of things needed?

Default Stopped in for an oil change and got a list of things needed?

I don't know that I needed the oil change but I figured the car is new to me so I wanted to start with a clean slate. anyway. After the oil change, they said I needed:
Glove Box door repair (True enough. It slams open): $224
Both Front Seat Backs Reprogrammed (Probably right. IT doesn't rise up at the end so the back of the front seats rub against the front of the back seats): $224
Engine Coolant Exchange. (The water pump was replaced in 2016 so I doubt this one: $179.95
Both Engine Air filters need to be replaced. (The previous owner kept up with maintenance so I doubt it. But will have an indy do that tomorrow for $170 and take a look at the old filters)Jaguar wants $220
Fuel injectors and throttle body needs cleaning service. (Not sure and no codes are showing.) $410


So the questions here are do these all sound like reasonable maintenance issues with a 2010 XKR with 22K miles? And how do the prices sound?

Well, for the Glove Box flop, all you need is literally ten minutes to remove I think five screws to get the box out and replace the broken plastic pin (you will see it very easily) with a tiny screw. Reinstall it and you just saved $1,344 per hour.
Air filters are like $25 for two through Amazon and take another whopping fifteen minutes to change, as you will need to lift either the front of your car or one side at a time. No need to remove the wheels, just turn them sharply and fold back the inner fender liners.
How are 'they' going to clean the injectors? Put a can of Injector Cleaner in the fuel tank? If you don't use crappy gasoline, this probably won't need to be done. Well, maybe if you have over 100,000 miles... Throttle body.... was the air inlet tube removed and checked visually? I don't know any other way to tell if it's dirty otherwise, unless you have codes or obvious engine problems.

I agree with CJ. Except the glove box repair took me about 30 minutes from start to finish last week. That included drinking a beer.

The oil change is another easy one. Buy an extraction pump. Amazon, ebay, or where ever. They are less than $30. It takes maybe 15 minutes to change the oil - less time than it takes me to drive 1/2 way to the dealer. You can buy the filters on Amazon or ebay and the right Castrol OE oil on ebay. All delivered to your house!

if the water pump was changed at a Jag dealer they should be able to determine that the coolant does NOT need changing now.

Seat Programming? They did not recommend the "windshield paste"?

Not they don't. Classic dealer upsell. Shame on them.

I agree, most of this list is DIY possible and fairly easy to boot. I would suggest that you make sure the oil meets Jag spec though. (0W-20 Castrol from your dealer, though I know it may be available on ebay). I picked up an extraction pump from Harbor Freight and just changed mine as I'm in the same boat not knowing what the POs upkeep level was.

Here I'll add, at Queen & Country's suggestion, I'm using Lubegard Engine Flush and will follow up with Techron fuel additive. I think that may be the answer for any injector issues as well as engine carbon.

As to seat programing, that would require more research (maybe someone here has posted on the subject).

Cee Jay is spot on, the glove box is almost stupid easy once you research it and understand the cause of failure.

none of those things change with age, only mileage. (except coolant)
You havent done enough miles to dirty injectors, gum-up throttle body.
If you cant do the rest yourself, including coolant, these proctologist have a right to give you a right rogering.

The glove box is easy until you find that the cable broke and not the pin. But you can get the cable and shock assembly seperatly.
The seat programming is a sdd programming issue only at the dealer. Normal charge is one hour for almost any programming. Youll mess up he back of the seat trim and the back seat quarter trim if it clashes. Before the seat back hit the rear quarter trim it will move the seat forward to prevent this. If not it keeps going back till it tweeks the seat back and trim.
The rest is all upsell not needed at that mileage yet imo

I had a feeling I was being hustled so I passed on all but the oil change. And I won't be visiting that dealership again. Thanks all for the opinions, advice and somre pretty hilarious one liners. I wouldnt not go therer because of this. This is really standard at most shops dealer or independant chains. Firestone, goodyear, midas, christian brothers etc... It is more indicative of you relationship with your advisor than anything else. Mine knows who will buy what and when based on working relationshp. I would have recommended all those be done too just different times and mileage than youre at. Just be informed and communicate your needs and what youre capable of and when you want a professional to help.
Its no different that when you go to the dr or dentist office. And i would never expect you to come in and say "hey you know i have a bad control arm bushing, or broken motor mount or hey my check engine light is on for a map sensor i think i just need the throttle body cleaned to fix it" thats my job to let you know what i see and or recommend. I have no idea how well you want to take care of your car or not. Fair?

Go in for an annual teeth cleaning and you get a free prostate exam- thats beyond fair. How do you guys protect yourselves from people abusing the system?

I interviewed 2 dealers prior to selecting who I would consider servicing it. Talked to service adviser then the service manager then the dealer GM. Toured the service area and talked to a few of the tech's. Although I've had 50+ years working on cars I consider myself a fair mechanic so experience helps in sorting out whether they are blowing smoke up your butt or just trying to provide you with service options. It works for me.

Here is what I see wrong with the system.
You guys are giving away 100s of free exams for every 1 guy that pays for the massage.
Thereby making the massage very expensive.
You should charge for the exam, if will make the cost of the massage trivial to the point that more people choose to go all the way.
For instance an alignment check is never free and cost 50% of the actual alignment- 100% of people opt for full alignment.
Bring it up at the next meeting; let the bean counters run some numbers, they will see. You can make a difference.

I replaced the air filters today. Here's a photo of one of the old ones that the dealership said were "black" and probably had never been replaced.

THATS FUNNY RIGHT THERE BECAUSE LIKE I TELL ADVISORS. IF YOU WANT ME TO "CHECK" THE AIR FILTERS, ITLL BE WHEN I INSTALL THE NEW ONES.

Jaguar's recommended service interval is 45K miles/ 3 years for the air filter element. You are at 1/2 the mileage. I don't think age makes that much difference on a filter element.

It does not look that bad to me. I would not call it "black". After going through the effort to check them, on an XK anyway, I would replace them.

I doubt the dealer actually looked the filters before recommending that they be replaced.

Not exactly a filter that seen it's full life to me, going by the photo.

The point is, I didn't ask them to check anything. I just wanted an oil change. The list they came back with included the "black" filter issue. At any rate, the list and the cost made me a little suspicious, which is why I declined all the things the SA said I needed to do right away. Interestingly, I never ran across that kind of behavior from the local dealer I've used here. I was in St Pete on business and thought it would be convenient to get the oil changed at the dealer there. That was my first (and last) visit to that dealership.
