Default strange fuel level readings

I just had this happen three times in the last two weeks. I'm driving my 2010 XK and suddenly the low fuel level light comes on, says I'm empty even though I know it has over half a tank. A few minutes later it was back to normal. Next time it lasted about 10 minutes and then went back to normal. Most recent time it stayed showing "empty" until I stopped, turned off the car and restarted it. Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks, Alfred

It sounds like a dodgy electrical contact on the fuel sender wiring.

That happened to me ONCE, about eight years ago. I had even forgotten my wallet and was 20 miles from home. I called the wife to fetch my wallet, and when I started it up to pull to the pumps, it read over a half-tank.
It never happened again though.
