Default Strong fuel smell (sometimes)

My 08 xkr occasionally to frequently gives me a strong fuel smell when running. It's not all the time which I would attribute to a leak, but when it does it is bad.

I can really smell it in the front wheel wells but not so much under the bonnet. I've already pulled the rear panel of the front fender liners hoping to find evap equipment (nope) and an obvious problem, but no joy yet. I also replaced the rubber seal from the intake T to the throttle body as it was pretty mangled, and for 24 hours it didn't stink - but now it does again.

So who here has resolved a similar issue?

Have you tried popping off the oil filler cap and smelling the crankcase?

Gasoline is highly volatile and the vapors are explosive, so don't delay finding the cause and fixing it. Gasoline evaporates very quickly, so a small leak can make a big stink with no visible signs of a leak.

For possible causes, see:

If you smell gas, know that you're driving a bomb. Those vapors are like a Molotov cocktail on wheels. All it takes is a spark.

The vehicle does its own leak down test after you shut it off, so probably not a leak if you're not getting codes. But def have a thorough look around. I had a visible/noticeable leak from the fuel rail pressure sensor.

CeeJay might be on to something.

Have you checked your fuel trims?

Could it perhaps be the exhaust smell we all get a whiff of when driving hard? Or is it 100% of the time while driving, whether sitting at a light or moving?

I found and fixed the fuel leak. It was the fuel pressure regulator on the right front fuel rail. It had literally burst.

With that fixed, the auxiliary heater pump sprung a leak the very next day. No love from the jag.
