Default Thinking of buying a 2007 XKR

Hello, I am new to the XKR forum. I have a 2003 XJR for my commuter car. I am considering a 2007 XKR with 38,000 miles. Please give me some insight as to the reliability, common repair issues, performance and things to look for etc..... I plan to get a pre purchase inspection if I receive a thumbs up from all of you !!. I do not want to waste my time if the XKRs are to finicky and have lots of repair issues. Thank you for your time

Car Crazy,

I'm not the one to answer your baseline questions. I know many members here drive the XK as a daily. Many have the R variant. Since you have a daily driver with your XJ, then you realize the XKR is more about the passion for the vehicle. No one here is going to suggest an R is a waste of time. :-)

I'm on the opposite side of you in a way. I bought a car (XKR) that didn't run, (Texas flood car) and is likely to cause me numerous problems over the next few years. Yes, I plan to use it for my daily 25 mile trip commute (in the summer anyway) and yes, I expect at some point or two, or three it will strand me on the side of the road. I'm signing up for that because of what the car is; it's looks, it's performance, it's feel; and what it does to my soul. It makes me happy to wrench on it, drive it, care for it and even in a way spend money on it when I know it's simply making it better. If your's checks out, and if it speaks to you... well.. happy motoring!

Hi!

The 2007 is actually the X150 platform; you are posting in the X100 forum, which is the platform previous to that. That said, the X150 is an EXCELLENT vehicle and while there are some issues like the dash wrinkles and the A/C drainage issue on early X150s; they are relatively minor, especially compared to stuff like nikasil, tensioners, water pumps, thermostat housing, transmissions, convertible top hydraulics that are items to be aware of on the X100 (which ones apply to your car depends on year and trim).

I have daily driven my 2000 XKR Convertible about 8 months out of the year the last 7.5 years and 40k miles. I drive it rain or shine and my daily cars get maybe 1k miles on them combined during this 8 month period. I have been happy with old XKR and find it just as usable as my 98 XJR in day to day living; given that I have had passengers in my XJR backseat exactly 1 time the 3.5 years I have owned it.

My experience with the X150 having driven and used a few; it's a great car and even more daily friendly than my X100. I look regularly and very well might take the plunge if I don't add an Aston Martin DB9 over a newer XKR (add in addition to, not get rid of my 00 XKR, I really like the car). Even a 2007 XKR is a great car, despite being the earliest and "worst" of the bunch in a few ways; being "worst" of the X150 platform is still a great place to be! With the antiquated antenna, slowest S/Ced drivetrain, etc. Great cars, all of them.

I really like the X150 coupe's hatchback more than the X100's coupe trunk; which for livability is great. I also really like the aluminum body over the rust prone steel; my XKR is flawless underneath and has basically no corrosion of any kind, barely even surface rust on fasteners; but the X100 like the X308 has plenty of water traps that can lead to rust, where body corrosion on X150s doesn't seem to be anything to note.

I've moved your question from X100 to X150 forum. This is the place to ask questions about the 2006-2014 XKR.

Lots of replies to an earlier post with the same title. I've decided to buy an XKR but the one in Florida I think not. It's still for sale. Found out the nav screen does not work and a replacement is $4300 plus installation! Looking at the car fax it may be a lemon but can't be sure. Sad.
So I still am trying to sell my XJS. Lowered the price 3 times. May lower it again. I like the looks of the 07 body style cars but like the dash of the earlier cars better. I think I need to wait to find a nice 07 or newer with somewhat low milage. They just have the WOW FACTOR a bit more so than the earlier ones. But I do like the earlier ones too.

It would be simpler to follow if you'd just create you own thread to document your sage versus piggy back on old ones. You'll get better advice as well if you post a link to the cars you are looking at.

If the screen itself is bad, you can get a replacement on ebay for $500-$800 and change it out yourself. If its just the nav unit in the trunk, they’re even cheaper.

Thank you all for the replies. I Have learned a lot about these cars just by reading all your posts. It will be quite a search when the time comes ( soon I hope) to find the right car. I'm really surprised with all the electrical "gremlins" the X150 cars have. Kind of scary.

Good thing is spare parts are plentiful should you ever need them however more importantly the 4.2L and zf gearbox are fairly bulletproof bar
