Default Ticking sounds & Cold start shutter

Hi Folks,

I recently (45 days ago) purchased my first Jag! I've had a variety of cars over the year but never a Jag so forgive me if there are perhaps straightforward answers to my queries. After purchasing the 2008 XKR (43000 miles) I did a standard set of maintenance items that I do to most cars, which includes: changed oil and filter, replaced plugs and ignition coils, cleaned the throttle body (its was dirty!), new air and cabin filters, flushed the brake fluid, topped off the differential fluid, greased anything I could find (which was on the axle only), and rotated the tires. After that things have been running smooth with two minor exceptions.

1. On a cold start, there is some excess vibration and shuttering for about a minute or so until the RPMs settle out. Occasionally this throws an error code for a misfire on one or more right bank only cylinders. I'm guessing this is a small vacuum leak but I have not been able to find it. Very option to suggests, especially given the maintenance i have already done.

2. There is a weird ticking sound coming from the back driver side of the engine. The tick is consistent no matter what the RPM's are. I took a up-close video over-top of where it sounds the loudest. That can be found here:
Any suggestions on what this is? It doesn't seem to be causing a problem but I just don't like it :-)

Thanks Much,
Justin

Ive never been one for quoting a post as a 'first responder' it just takes up space needlessly.

Can't really give advice on point 1 but can on point 2

thanks - I did happen to read that post before I submitted mine but (Although the culprit could theoretically be the same) there were some significant differences. My tick is not intermittent and that posters’ was and his changes with RPM whereas mine does it- it’s constant. So to some extent I ruled out that as an initial diagnosis. I have however run two bottles of injector cleaner through the engine so far and plan more cleaning to come!

I never spotted my rattle it was pointed out when I had it dyno'd as with engine cover on and driving at 2-3k RPM I couldn't hear it...perhaps tunes to loud?

One thing confused me in your original post, you mentioned 'rotating tyres' this normally means front to back and works fine on most cars, however does your 4.2 XKR not have a staggered set of wheels/tyres....larger on the back line mine?

I took the wheels off the bleed and brakes and perform a general inspection so I rotated the tires left to right, as yes, the front and rear are different sizes!

With the windows up I cannot hear the ticking at all. I just happen to have the car on when I pull into the garage and it caught my attention. Now I can’t get out of my head and I want to know why 😬

clearly you know what youre doing. And I’ve only used directional tires on the Jags.

But before then, I always avoided the side to side rotation pattern as I thought the car acted a little squirrelly on the road due to the reversed direction of the rotated and essentially reversed cupped tire. Interesting. Out of interest, how many rotate side to side? Of course, and do not have directional tires.
