The OP was providing information on timing chain lubrication and wear factors, so having an engine design that removes the timing chain mechanisms may be one direction to go in for future vehicles.
I'm aware of the F1 designs as well as many that are still in the conceptual stages. My point was that poppet designs which have been around for more than a century, it's time to rethink, not only for tightening regulations, but for simplicity, adaptability, and certainly a reduction of oxides of nitrogen by over 90% is something that has plagued us for some time. It's why we have cats...

Frankly, I believe we are reaching the end of the life-cycle for the internal combustion engine since, as you rightly point out, there are other options becoming closer to reality that may spew less NOx and other pollutants.

Ironically, the automobile with an internal combustion engine was seen as a way to eliminate another form of pollution in the early part of the twentieth century...

You are right, but in a strange way it will cause a growth in internal combustion engines: just read a great study that oil producing countries have a big problem, they will never sell all the reserves they have before it becomes obsolete- so they are trying to sell it now while they can $40 a barrel, it will potentially be a lot less in the future due to ovewr supply.

No need to panic as it will be a long time before they replace IC engines. There are to many roadblocks to it's replacement. As for me it will never happen but maybe in 50 or 100 years there may be a major breakthrough. Until then we'll see electric improvement with battery technology but not enough to replace IC.

Perhaps, but remember the same was thought about steam power, which lasted over one hundred years before becoming obsolete.

A nice tidbit from an industry insider article.
We can see that its the wild west when it comes to Direct Injected engines- its all one big learning curve for everyone. The part about VVT screens is very interesting.

I'm going to drop my two cents here since Lothar suggested I check this thread out. I miss my beloved Jaguars and working at a Jaguar dealer but this has been eye opening since I work at a BMW dealer now. BMW has, for just over a year, been going through their own 5L timing chain issues. We have a campaign in place to run a timing chain test to check for stretch. There are parameters listed when the check is done. At our dealer, we assumed it was showing the result of broken timing chain guides as when we started doing chain replacements, a few of them had broken guides. After reading this article, though, it corroborates with BMW's idea that oil life is the issue and to shorten the oil change interval on those engines as part of the campaign.

In short, BMW is having the same issue with chain stretch and oil life. Keep in mind that these engines are twin turbo and are reverse head design (the intake goes in the outside of the vee and the exhaust comes out inside the vee). This design causes heat issues in areas that didn't have issues before.

The oil change interval on that engine, by the way, was changed from 15,000 miles to 10,000 miles. Google N63 timing chain campaign for more information.

Just my couple pennnies that it is not just Jaguar seeing an issue.

Thanks Mark, that is all we can do is triangulate from the various car manufacturers recommendations. GM has had a nightmare on its hands and they too are blaming the oil. " with extended oil change intervals, the timing chain could wear prematurely and cause the illumination of the Service Engine Soon light".
There hasnt been a manufacturer spared. Hilariously GMs oil life monitor system was recalled.

The reason Jaguar owners should pay attention is because these are cars worth collecting and saving. The timing chain is just the canary in the coal mine, soot loaded oil will eat others parts too soon enough.

Default Castrol edge professional

I will admit I have not read every post since post #14 showing the image of the Castrol Edge Professional oil bottle. That is not what is recommended for my 2013 XKR and seems I have read of some confusion over this elsewhere in the forums. What is recommended for the 5.0 is Castrol Edge Professional OE meeting FORD WSS-M2C925A and 925B specs pictured below. 930 and 945 are not correct. At least I have seen nothing referencing a replacement for the handbook recommendation. Even had to correct this misperception at a dealership.
