Transmission a bit snatchy
I’ve noticed recently when I put the my 07 xkr in D and try to pull away gently it won’t and seems to pull away like I’ve pressed the accelerator harder than I have. Don’t get me wrong it’s not a big change but I can tell. I’m going to have the gearbox serviced as there’s no mention of it in the service history but I was just wondering if anyone else has come across this.
I bought the car a few months ago from very rural west Wales and I’ve been using it to commute from the midlands to Cornwall, im wondering if a gearbox reset might help too?

A couple things are at play here...
The car learns how you drive and wants to continue in that manner. If you usually pull away hard it will always WANT to pull away hard. To undo this, you must do a hard reset using the battery cables. It will relearn your driving style again, but it takes awhile.
ALSO, how many miles since you changed the transmission fluid? Every 60,000 miles is pretty much required, and ten years regardless of mileage. In THAT case, EVERY fluid on the entire vehicle should be changed. All seven of them.

As CeeJay says, the TCU, transmission control unit's adaptive. If there was somehting wrong, it would be providing a MIL DTC. The reset suggestion he provided ONLY affects the ECU though, as TCU reset can only be performed via JLR's SDD or over time with consistent driver input.
I also find 1st gear a little snatchy it just feels like it's geared way too low. I had the transmission serviced which helped a little but it's still difficult to get a really smooth pullaway especially with the engine cold. I find myself selecting 2nd once stopped which gives a lovely take off and the car jumps back into auto after a few seconds, not ideal but much smoother.
Maybe a stupid question - but doesn’t it start anyway in second gear if in “D”?
Xet, after a cold start (but not in summer!), I sometimes also feel relatively hard shifts after start, for the first 30 to 60 seconds only. Have to admit that this never caused me any concern.

The only time these cars start off in second gear is if Manual is selected and the driver fails to downshift. That is a built-in safety to avoid damage.

(So I feel relieved that my question maybe wasn’t as silly as I thought.)

My new to me XK, does start off quickly from the stops. I can stop that by one click on the +paddle, and it will depart in 2nd gear, and reset to D shortly afterwards. Also I am thinking "to clean the throttle body" before resetting the ECU, to fix the problem. My new Mongoose is in the mail.
