Default Transmission Fluid/Pan Service

I've searched a number of different posts regarding this and have some fairly good info, but wanted to throw this out there... My car is an 07 and probably has not had a tran fluid change. I'd like to have a local tranny place I trust do the job, but wanted to be sure I had everything covered.

I saw some posts say 6L and others say 7L of ZF fluid - What is the actual amount of fluid I should be purchasing ? One kit ( http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=product&id=186&parent=0 ) has 6L, and another I saw online has 7L. Just want to be sure if I bring the shop a kit with sleeves, etc... that it's complete. Any other tips or advice when getting this service completed ?

Dumb question: if this is a trusted transmission shop, why bring them anything? They are the pros, let them spec and deal with it.

Id rather be an educated consumer when bringing my car in... I trust the shop, but also value the forum's experience having done this in the past...

dsd, a little harsh, no? I was always told the only dumb question is the one not asking.... As the OP mentioned its a shop that he trust to do the job, but maybe they haven't done this particular vehicle before. Maybe they OP and the shop agreed on price with OP purchasing all materials. Maybe OP even though he trusts the shop to do the work, he wisely wants to do all his homework, so that he can be sure shop has done there due diligence and he can be intelligent when speaking with technicians... My point is they're lots of reasons why to ask the question.

I thought the price for materials was about 1/2 that sites. It's on my shorter list of things to do before winter.

If you have an 07 N/A engine then the capacity is 9.5 liters. 10 liters for the SC engines. If you are doing a drain and fill, the amount that comes out varies. You should go in with 8 liters, because if you're short the required capacity, she'll stay on the lift until you get enough fluid.

As there is no dipstick, no one can say with certainty what will drain out or if it was at the correct capacity from the get go. I've done two drain and fills myself, and on one, even though 6 liters came out, 7 was needed to fill it. My comments apply to drain and fill procedure recommended by ZF @ 8 years/ 80,000 miles only. If you do a full flush, lean on the shop for guidance on how much to bring.

Pan and gasket, new bolts (20), sleeve, liquid gold is the parts list. The CTSC is overpriced IMO, but that's me.

There is a sticky at the top of this forum but a more complete one on the x350 page (same tranny). It has a lot of useful info, even if you're not troubleshooting.

As to the shop, they've likely seen many of these transmissions. They're used in Audi, Hyundai, BMW too so you should feel comfortable knowing this probably isn't their first rodeo.

hope this helps.

I have done it twice. First time I bought the kit from CTSC and 2nd time my indy bought the parts (he did both services).

I fear my comment was mistaken— I was asking the dumb question, not the op.

I’m due for this as well, but will probably wait until winter. I think I have a small leak at the mating sleeve.

$180 https://www.ebay.com/i/361466018389?chn=ps and $9 for the sleeve. Not sure if this the correct kit but...

Service info says 8700-252 service kit but all that comes up in UK stuff for silly money.

Thanks everyone for their input -
Looks like most of the “kits” come with 6 bottles. The CTSC kit seemed to be very popular after searching a number of threads here and uses genuine OEM ZF Pan and Fluid + comes with the sleeve and some extra bolts etc... I’m going to swing by and see what the shop prefers : me bring it in , or they pick it up instead. Honestly I’d probably feel better getting it myself and knowing it’s all genuine and not ‘generic/compatible’ , but that’s just me .... lol

just want to be sure if it needs 6,7,8+ bottles of fluid - becaus like Sean said, once it’s on the lift and drained it ain’t going anywhere until it’s all there.

If I were doing a full flush, I would switch to Ford's Mercon SP fluid. It's spec'd the same as Lifeguard 6 Shell M-1375.4 vs. meeting M-1375.4 specs. Apparently the word meet does not have to mean equal. I've looked at the spec sheets. I would caveat that with "Ford's" brand. You start looking at other brands the "meet" Mercon's SP specs and they start to drift from the Shell spec.

I thought differently for a long time but there are enough guys on the X350 forum who switched without incident and many miles later. The long standing theory was that the TCM was tuned to M-1375.4 and any variation would have a negative impact on performance.

I see the liquid gold prices have jumped on eBay. Oh that precious mineral oil. FWIW.

Buy the kit and 1-2 extra bottles of fluid.
