Tutorial: Start button replacement on 2010+ gear selector modules
My start button started showing signs of cracks a year ago, and I've been waiting for a replacement to pop up on eBay. The start botton on the refresh vehicles isn't available as a separate part number, so there aren't many options for replacement.
I had no interest in the 3rd party button caps and covers. This used button was $75. Ridiculous, but there are no other options below that price point.
I forgot to take a picture of the button before starting disassembly, but this gives you an idea:
First step was to open up the lower console and remove the gear selector module. Pretty straightforward.
Next is to start removing screws. Having a set of security allen keys or bits is needed for this job.
First the selector wheel center cover needs to be removed to access the screw that holds it to the position sensor.
4 screws to remove the gear motor and position sensor:
Next, a pry tool to gently release the tabs holding this plastic PCB cover.
Next remove the two cables for sensing and motor power.
Next there are 4 longer screws that hold the PCB.
Next are 3 shorter screws. The PCB should be able to come off.
Next are 4 screws that were under the PCB, holding the lower PCB housing to the upper gear selector surround:
Next you can access the underside of the start button housing. It should pull up easily.
Here's another view of the button housing.
The damaged start button is held in with plastic tabs. Gently use a thin pry tool to remove the button.
Here's the backside of the button. This is NOT swappable with the hollow back button you commonly see sold in eBay.
Reinstall in reverse order!

No start buttons, though. Also, many of those rotary knobs for "any Jaguar or ranger Rover" don't have the correct dimensions for the XK and are too tall so they can't be screwed down properly without bottoming out and causing damage to the position sensor.
