Ugly rotors....
Frickenjag - You are probably right, taping off the rotor would be a good idea, although a little more time consuming, doesn't matter as long as the job's done right though, eh?
To be honest, I use a 2 brushes, a small artists brush for the small / hard to reach areas and around a 1/2" brush ( both good quality - no nylon brushes ) and do it freehand, take my time and get a good finish / edge.
That's what works for me. I guess if you were going to the trouble of masking it off, you'd be better using a rattle can ( just be sure to mask of the wheel well liners and adjacent areas too.
I've been doing it this way for several years now, always get great results too. I guess I re do them at least once a year ( not generally necessary ) but I like the glossy / clean fresh look all over, that even cleaning be difficult to achieve.
Thanks!
The end result.....
It was quite easy to edge the the hat portion "free-hand" with a good quality brush.
For what it's worth, these are the steps....
These rotors are perfect candidates for powder coating, however, didn’t want to dismantle them now. Would be a good winter time project, though.
We’ll see how this process holds up, then decide.
1. wire brushed all of the area
2. used steel wool to break any glaze
3. vac the area
4. wiped down with the “Ultra Clean” paint prep
5. brushed a light coating of high temp (up to 1200º) paint
6. re-coat after 24 hours……
7. repeat for the front
This is a good time to scrub the wheels too.
