Well, I give up!

2007 XKR convertible. Under the armrest cover, at the back (where I keep my coins) there is a small rectangular insert with a sliding lid on it. I also see a symbol of an arrow or antenna. Please can someone tell me what this is for? I can't see any reference to it in the manual.

That is the start control unit. If you get in car and it won't start due to smart key not found showing on dash, put the key in there. Gently push down and it will suck key down. To get it back out, ignition off push it down again gently. It will pop up. You can practice it. Put key in with key blade facing up.
