Default Water in Trunk

Soo, I know the answer first is don't take the baby out in the rain, but my truck is in the shop (irony is moonroof won't close and I wouldn't want it to get water in it).

After work, I took my cleaning to the laundry and it was soaked (it had been left in the trunk). It appears there was water just below where the hinge for the trunk and also a seam in the body panels.

Are there any experiences of water leaking around the bolts or could the seam be under or unglued? If this is the case, any suggestion for resealing? Do I need to be worried about the rest of the car?

Any other spots I should look for?

Well that looks terrible. Do you think that is a previous accident repair issue?

I haven't seen this type of issue reported in my short 8 months of activity on this forum.

Do the trunk sit flush when closed? May be just adjusting the trunk a little.

The 1st picture has me a little concerned as it does not look as if the metal was joined correctly. Also is this where the leak is and if so then the seal doesn't even come into play. I would lay some paper down on the trunk floor and close the boot and spray with water. Once you find the source it will be easier to seal it up. You might also want to pull the seal and see whats under it .

I just peeled back my trim to take a look at mine, it is a soft filler of some type. But it is a very tight joint, yours looks like it shifted or is spreading? Hard to tell in the picture if the filler is pushed out of joint shifted right.

I agree with tampamark. The OP joined this forum in September 2013 and has a 2010 XKR, so it appears that he bought it used. It might have previously been in an accident and improperly repaired.

If the seller misrepresented the condition of that car, the buyer might have a legal claim against the seller. Need more facts.

I bought the car about 3 months ago. It had a clean car fax (know they can be faked) and passed a mechanic inspection. I will have to do a closer look for any signs of damage myself, but hadn't seen anything in all the looking at it.

It appears the water was leaking in between the seam and that the two panels had debonded. I planned to check by pouring some water over the joint and seeing where I get leaks. I ran my fingers around the seals and the seals for the top (which was replaced just prior to purchase, so I assumed it was the culprit, but that doesn't appear so). I am in the middle of trying to close a couple of things at work, so not sure when I will get a chance to do some more investigating, but I will be sure to keep updating.

Are there other things I should be looking at, besides in that specific area and checking any other visible joints for similar looks of debonding at this time?

I'm having trouble getting my head around of what that first picture is. Guess I'll have to pop the trunk and look around the upper righthand side area.
It does appear, from the picture, that the area was repainted after the separation, so I'd also agree that this looks like a repair job that failed to make the connection water tight.

kj,
For reference in the first photo, it is looking forward and up a bit I believe. The gasket for the trunk is the black at the top of the photo. I am holding the trunk liner back to expose the seam. This is in the area right where the trunk lid bolts down.

Incase anyone is wondering, it is a convertible.

Thanks, that makes sense now. I'll have to peek under there to see what mine looks like.

Since your 2010 was the first year for the 5.0, maybe the body designers didn't compensate the massive torque put out by the newer XKR vs the older 4.2, and the body is getting twisted out of shape.

Ok, I took a look at mine, and agree with tampamark.
Here's a picture of mine, the soft sealer has no gaps.

Your seam leaves a lot to be desired….. The bad news is that its more than likely the cause of your water ingress…. the good news is that it should be a reasonably easy (if panels have no warpage) and not expensive fix. I would go to a reputable body shop and have a chat with them. Best of luck...

Talked to a friend who works for the big 3. Went and bought the pictured below and use it to seal the gap as pictured. Seems to be working and has about the same consistency as the seal that was the OEM. Sorry for the really slow reply, work has gotten ugly so I've been enjoying her, but haven't gotten to get any detailing or extra work done. She's taken a few work trips though.

This thread is 4 years old - but the car in question was a convertible.
