When I was a child I hid my mothers car keys in a pair of her shoes.

My worst nightmare. Bought my XKR used and only cam with 1 fob. Hope you find it.

For the rest of us with 1 fob, are there any alternatives for having a second made/programmed outside of the dealer? Seems excessive so far as cost. Certainly understand if no fob is presented and a new one is desired as there will be some leg work to properly identify owner.

I guess I am used to making sure I have 2 fobs to make a 3rd, in some cases I have been able to program both smart keys and remotes right from the cars ignition and a sequence.

I'd hesitate to send my only fob via mail for copying/programming, but just wondering if there are any other options.

Glad the outcome was satisfactory and nice that you have kept your sense of humor.
My wife's key got lost many years ago but still had my key and a valet key (steel key S-Type). Looked "everywhere" and many months later decided to get a replacement. When I brought the car back from having the new key programed I sat down in the easy chair and found the missing key in a chair crack. Karma, or something about Jag keys?

Cost in the UK for the new fob:

£170/$236 inc tax at main dealer (after my 15% discount)
£75/$105 for programming at Indy

Total = £225/$341

Picking mine up today

Default Try Ebay

When I purchased my "98"XK8, it only had one fob. I purchased one on Ebay and was able to program it myself from instructions obtained on the forum.
Good luck to you.

True enough... but for those with the x150, don’t try this! The modern fob is a security key vault. It is VERY difficult to hack. It is not the same technology as in the x100.

Note that there are different X150 Smartkey fobs for different model years, and they're not interchangeable. Early 4.2L models use a single-channel fob and later models use a multi-channel fob. To reprogram a used fob, it must first be cleared - electronically divorced - from its parent vehicle. It's a complex process, but can be done by a knowledgeable technician with the right equipment. For details, see this old thread:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ion%85-171095/

If you buy a used Smartkey, make sure the frequency (single or multi channel) is compatible with your model year and that you get a money-back guarantee from the seller if it doesn't work.

Default Alternative method to obtain extra Jaguar keyfobs

Hello everybody.
It may be too late for our friend in Michigan who lost his one and only key fob, but for everyone else there may be a way for you to get an extra key fob for your Jag at a much lower cost. We live in Western Maryland where the nearest Jaguar dealer is at least 110 miles away. We can not afford To lose a one and only key fob. For my wife’s 2000 Jaguar S-Type and now her 2005 S-Type R, which each came with only one key, I bought used or reconditioned blank key fobs from eBay. For the first Jaguar I took the key fobs to a Jaguar dealer who had to send them away to get cut and then go back to the dealer to have the key fob programmed. This was cheaper, but a pain in the butt. For the second Jaguar I obtain two additional key fobs and found a locksmith who had the equipment to both cut and program them. A locksmith with this equipment is not common, but probably can be found in a larger metropolitan area that has a Jaguar dealer. By doing this we saved about $1100 over what it would’ve cost us from a Washington, DC Jaguar dealer for two keyfobs. It saved us about $800 when compared to a Pittsburgh Jaguar dealer. I hope this information may be useful for some of you. Safe driving.

Unfortunately, it's not as easy for X150 owners as it was for your wife's cars.

The Jaguar Smartkey is not "just another key." It is a highly sophisticated digital vault.

Years ago, Jaguar had problems with the X100 and other models being stolen because the keyfobs were so quickly and easily cloned. To prevent this, Jaguar created a diabolical new design - the Smartkey - that made it virtually impossible for thieves to use a cheap "code grabber" to quickly and easily clone the key and steal the car. Unfortunately, that also made it expensive for owners to replace a key.

From the factory, each X150 Smartkey is electronically paired with modules in the car. If that Smartkey is separated from the car with which it was born, it becomes an orphan. That orphaned Smartkey must first be electronically divorced from its parent before it can be reprogrammed and paired with another X150 for it to be fully functional. Both key and car must be present to simultaneously program and pair their modules using the proprietary Jaguar SDD tool and software.

Ha! Jag not nearly diabolical as BMW. I learned when buying a Bimmer with one key that the fobs cannot be programmed. You have to buy fobs matched to your car from the dealer. Purportedly when BMW runs out of matching chips you need a new ECU with new matching fobs.
This probably doesn't apply to X150s either but there are independents who will cut Tibbe key blanks for you. The fobs still need programming but I was able to save some on the S-Type keys I have needed.

BMW prices all their replacement and repair parts way higher because they know that nearly every part on the car will need to be replaced at least once within the first several years. Good business model, I guess.

I lost my key for a while and this is where it was located. It processed through the washer and dryer, then the next time I wore those shorts I discovered the key. Seems the key is very durable. Thankfully we have two keys so no panic.

Under the bed time is the best time

THa ks for all the comments, and I am glad the ordeal is over. Have had the car out every day, and aside from some upcoming suspension work and a despararately needed bath, the car is running an absolute treat

Installing the one touch roof kit from jagwrangler this week as well! Very very excited!

This happened to me once with my Expedition. I ended up finding the key in the trash. It had gotten between some mail and thrown away. Luckily I had the wherewithal to check the trash can before it was either taken by the trash service or I went to buy new keys.

After many happy years with my 1988 XJ6 Sovereign in Toronto, I believe this my first whimper for help. Both sets of keys were stolen in separate incidents. Where do I start? A local dealer tells me key blanks no longer made, locksmiths wary, supply chain yadda yadda, millions of dollars...! Am I the only person this has happened to? Don

Wrong forum @donred88 . You may have better luck in the appropriate forum as these cars do not use the same key as your car.
Call a locksmith? change the barrels for replacement keys??
