Default Well, it finally happened - RESOLVED

I only had one keyfob.

Now I have zero after my keyfob has decided to leave the physical plane of this universe.
I have turned my house upside down. I have looked in, on, under, around, everything I can think of. The key simply doesn't exist anymore.

I am getting towed to the dealer today, they are a bit booked but have a slow day tomorrow for sure, so they guarantee it completed by tomorrow afternoon.

For those of your wondering, I am in the Detroit area of michigan, price quoted was 550 ish for the keyfob, 185 for programming.

I think I am going to bite the bullet and just buy two directly. Then I have the extra one. I should have done this when I bought the car but I decided to play with fire.

Be smart. Get a second key. Don't be a dumbass like me

Thank you for coming to my ted talk! I just needed to vent a bit
Cheers all

Check the pockets of the pants you wore yesterday. When this happens to me, inevitably, that's where I find it, sometimes in the laundry room.

STarted there. As far as I can tell, the wife and I have checked every pair of pants I own at this point. Theimmis is made some what more complicated by the fact the fast time I saw the key was last Monday (last time it was driven) and only noticed missing yesterday.

Don't be surprised if down the road you'll find yourself with 3 key fobs! Good luck!

Just bought a new fob and had it programed. $340.00 ish for the fob and $120.00 ish to program. If you don't have a relationship with the dealer and you show up with a car and no fob you will need your title. I belive with no fob you have to buy two as it takes two fobs to program?? I think.

You have to have 2 FOBs present to program them. It also divorces any keys that were previously programmed, so if you find the old one, it will just be a paperweight.

or I could presumably ask them to program the old one to the new set up as well. But I am planning on buying the 2 keyfobs. So no worries there

I have one of these paperweights. I found the one after I got a new one programmed.

Try starting your car if it starts you know it is close by.

Now trhat's a good idea!! If it slipped between / under the seats, success!!
This is high on my get-around-to-it list; I'm playing with fire only having only one key.....

If the Smartkey was left in the car, it may cause Convenience Mode to stay active and cause the battery to run down to the point where it won't start.

That's evidence that the key is in the car.

Search your car again. Everything's gotta be someplace!

I have tried starting the car (just after tearing start my wardrobe )

car says can't detect key, please insert I to the slot.

An update on prices for those who will be in a similar situation
Transmitter: 350 eachProgramming: 253 (1.5 ish hours at 169 per hour)
Actual keys (which I haven't ordered, I can deal with that later) : 190 ish each

On the plus side, as mentioned, I will get nice new fobs! My current one is a bit on the....worn out....side of things things all in all an expensive lesson to learn. But I am laughing about it. Get the girl back tomorrow thankfukly, and my AAA membership paid for itself with the free tow. So that is nice

Nope, once the ignition is switched off it will still go through the shutdown cycle regardless of whether the fob is in the car or not.

That's why I said "may cause", not "will cause". I wasn't certain. Thanks for clarifying!

Argh,

So, they didn't get to it today, but when I went to the dealer to talk to the service guy (because he didn't return my phone call), he mentioned that there might be a problem with the KVM (?) keyless vehicle Module (I know I am misremembering the name he told me) because 2011 were tricky and they sometimes have issues. He genuinely seemed to be priming me to have to buy an additional bunch of **** that I didn't need to buy until I questioned him as to why it would have failed after only a week of sitting (I drove it last monday). At which point he made sure to mention that this was worst case scenario and that things would probably be fine.

Honestly, a bit suspicious, and if they don't have it done tomorrow I am just going to take it to a different dealership

Seems a bit odd to me but whatever.

Good news: the two new keyfobs programmed great. I am picking the car up this afternoon
bad news: I found the original key 10 minutes after the dealer finished programming the fobs, but before they even called me to say it was done.

Good news: while looking for the key, I have done more cleaning and dusting than in the past 4 weeks combined. So things are VERY sorted.

For those of you wondering, the key was under the bed and inside a radiator cover. The wife and I looked u der the bed 3-4 times. But we have baseboard head, it slid under the baseboard completely and was on edge so it was nearly impossible to see. Only saw it this time because I was lucky and just barely saw a glint of metal.

Oh well. Good thing I didn't order the physical blades I still have one of those anyway
