The Boxer Had a weakenss in the design, Subaru had many law suits and stuff - also because many were modofied that made it even worse - they are not as bad as you think - much of it went down to poor ownership and neglect - I had the 3.0 EZ30 in my old SpecB and it was a peach of an engine and sounded the business - sold it for £6000 last year around 140k miles - more than I paid for it, so I was effectively getting paid to drive it
I tend to keep away from turbo cars personally and never owned one

ACTUALLY, lower octane fuel burns faster and has more concussive force than higher octane. In engines, it's the compression that would cause detonation prior to ignition that would kill an engine quick. Higher octane is less volatile under compression, which is why higher compressions can be used, which ALONE provides more power. Higher octane is merely a requirement OF that higher compression, and high octane actually decreases the ultimate power output slightly.

You have to do that, because higher compression. The ECU would retard the ignition to prevent detonation if the knock sensors detected anything bad.
