I got my XK(2013)in June this year, I would like to drive it through the winter(UK), I've noticed its quite skittish even when the roads are a little wet. Does anyone drive their car through the winter? Will winter tyres make all the difference required to drive through the winter? Or at least 95%? It's either that or I'll need to drive the wife's Fiat 500, nice wee car, but just not me 🤣

 

I drive mine through winter BUT I have studded wintertyres and treated my XK underneat with Fluid Film wich is the best anti rust treatment I have experienced ( used this to my cars for 10 years) and works perfect against the salty roads. And the heater in these cars is very good (compared to my Land Rover Defender🥶&#128514

good quality winter tires, smaller section width a must. I find the car very well balanced and a pleasure to drive even in inclement cold weather.

Let me add please, I purposely use higher profile tires as the weather gets cold in order to absorb the irregular base better.
And be less jarring on the car.
As I’ve shared before, and still relevant today
my summers are on 20s.
my all-seasons on 19s
my winters on 18s.

How do you apply the Fluid Film? I caught my attention with this and just read a little on it.

 

The Fluid Film is applied by compressed air for large areas such as to my Land Rover ( chassi frames) but on my XK I used spray cans because of the smaller areas wich need to be treated. You van buy a full kit or just aerosol spraycans. The Fluid Film contains no chemicals and is very friendly to the envarment as it is made from sheeps wool.

 

There is an option, undoubtedly cheaper and similar....
In the US North-East, people spray a mix of Bar & Chain Oil mixed with a bit of 'regular' oil to thin the mix on the underside of vehicles. It is a sticky and persistent goo, and it attracts road grime, which itself is beneficial. The road grime makes the oil non-messy, and it gives additional protection.
Summary... Bar & Chain oil is GREAT, but you need an application device similar to the Fluid Film setup.

 

Does it come off easily come spring?

 

Fluid Film is easy to clean off if you use a high pressure washer with heated water. But I only use it when I need to do some work underneat the car. Otherwise the Fluid film can stay on but need to be retreated every second year.
