Winter project: Quaife install/trans service.
So I got a wild hair today. Been waiting for a long stretch of days off to get this project under way so with 10 days off I decided it's as good a time as any. ( I worked out of town the 23rd-26th of December so I deserve it.) Remembering the Jack's transmission removal I got the diff out today. Started at 2pm and had it out by 6pm taking my time. It was fairly cut and dry. Glad I had a transmission jack handy. Fluid looked awful after 50k miles. I'll be opening it up tomorrow. Ran out of daylight. More to come. Write up soon after.
This little jewel is heavy!

If you're talking about the differential I bought the Quaife from a member that never got around to installing it. They retail for a tad under $1500 US. $50 for bearings and $40 for seals and add some diff fluid. I also plan on adding a plug to drain the diff in the future. Add $15 for that. Can't really put a value on blood, sweat and tears. The trans service will run about $450 for the new pan and fluids. Car has just under 50K miles. It's due.

So today I cleaned up the diff cover and removed all the old adhesive. Removed the half shaft seals and sacrificed only one pinky. Mashed it good! Bearings and races were picked up this morning. Tomorrow the old diff comes out and the Quaife goes in. There's a giant snap ring that I don't have the tool for and will acquire. Got to get new seals and I may get them from Ford. The number on the seal shows it's a Ford part number via Google. Otherwise I'll visit my local Jaaaag dealer. Taking many pictures.

Easy peasy. Trimming the fins was a pain. Used the matching drill bit and tap for the plug. I used a magnet on the (aluminum) shavings. LOL!

Today the Jag got re-assembled. Diff is in, suspension re-secured, driveshaft re-connected and transmission pan swapped. Tomorrow is fluids in both and re-install the exhaust if I'm not in too much pain from my 10am root canal. Maybe I'll work like crazy while I'm still numb! This project is going amazingly well so far although I'm growing weary from crawling around under the car.
Diff going in! New seals, new bearings and races and soon fresh fluid. Will use Motorcraft synthetic 75w-140 as per specification. $22 a quart.

Looks like a glass of ale and a glass of stout to me. Your choice; just what the doctor ordered! I'm not sure what's worse - death, taxes or a root canal. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks but no. There will be two write up threads. One for the diff and one for the trans. Coming soon.
Oh and Stuart, I prefer stout but I'll take either if you're buying!

Well done!
Again you've provided an excellent how-to guide.
Now for the 'stupid question' - have you taken it down from the jacks and tried it out?
Does it meet your expectation?
And how does it sound? (I've read reports of extra noise coming from them).
Again, thanks for the terrific write-up!
