Default XK 2008 catalytic converter

Hello all, I have a noise (tapping noise) more when the car is cold, and the dealer told me it could be the catalytic converter, that many xk were having the same problem, this week I will bring back the car to have it checked again.
its a tapping noise when there is bumps on the road at lower speed.

jaguar told me to replace it its 2000 euros, but I can see there is much cheaper one online , YMCC001 Yonaka 2.5" High Flow Catalytic Converter (no flange) for 07-up Jaguar XK_Series at Andy's Auto Sport

what do you think? have you heard of the same problem as I did not find any post about this issue? thank you!

Welcome to the forum!

I've only been in the Jag world for less than a year, but this is the first "failed cat" I have heard of.
I'd expect more an exhaust leak via the manifold or joint first. (As the car heats up the parts expand and the gap closes itself.)

Maybe get a basic muffler shop to look around under there first for loose parts?

Vince

FWIT I had the same symptoms on a mid 80s Lincoln Mark V11 at low mileage. Over here there is a mandated warranty on air pollution stuff unrelated to the car warranty. Are you in Spain or California? I think it's 50,000 miles or less regardless of age. I could be wrong about that but you may want to check your local laws.

+1 Welcome to the forum!

If your check engine light hasn't come on, I suspect the tapping noise is not due to a failure of one of your catalytic converters but is from metal expanding and contracting as CleverName/Vince suggests. It could be coming from anywhere in the exhaust system, including a catalytic converter since they do get quite hot. Your dealer should be able to do an OBDII check or emissions test to determine if one or both of your cats is defective.

I had one of my cats replaced under warranty after my CEL came on. See this post for more information: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...e-light-32528/

Hope this helps,

Stuart

p.s. I would be wary of the inexpensive generic catalytic converter sold by Andy's. It might not be a direct simple fit and unless you replace both sides the exhaust flow might be uneven and it might trigger the CEL. Also, you need to compare the warranties from your dealer and from Andy's.

The dealer is excelent here Grupo Iberica jaguar, in Valencia , rarely seen a shop as good in my whole life, they have always been super helpfull and I trust them a lot, they offered me many expensive parts and they always helped, they did not say the catalytic converter was bad, they probably check it if not this week, but they said it was vibrating inside and many were doing so, its not worth changing for them, but it disturb me a lot .

Just an FYI... Normally the only way you could have shattered the honeycomb material inside a cat is if you hit something really really hard... The impact should have left a good dent on the casing. (Hardly something "many are doing".) I've "punched" a few of these (not Jags) in my day and that material doesn't shatter easily...

You seem set on trusting the dealership and that's probably a good decision on your part. If I thought it was exhaust related, my local muffler shop charges a third or forth the dealership rates, and there is no special science behind an Jag exhaust except for possible proprietary fitment of a pre-cat.

Vince,

See post # 4. One of the failure modes of cat. converters is a clicking sound on heat up or cool down. I think there must be welded or press fit flanges that somehow come loose.

When I had my cat problem the Lincoln Tech knew right off what it was and described it as a classic symptom of cat failure. He, like the serv tech in Spain, told me it was not a critical issue but I was unwilling to put up with a failure in any form so I had the cat replaced.

thanks a lot guys , no it has not been hit by anything, I can see his shape is perfect. There is lot of bumps here to get out of the place I live.

Clevername yes I trust them and I understand they deal with jag parts only but I will try to see a muffler shop, we need to get all measures. Normally its time for me to change of car, and with the tires I don't want spend 4000 more, so i will try first to have it change to a muffler shop then tires , then I will keep the car little longer.

thank you all

I wanted to get a November 2011 xk with the new headlights, a 5 liter, but finally, I don't think I can afford to loose that much the first years.

Cats can rattle when cold if interior welds loosen. Exhaust heat can potentially swell interior fittings lessening rattles. The cats can still deliver clean emissions in this state.

Diagnosis is quite simple. Remove the cats (they will be cold by the time you have removed them). Shake the cats. Poke their interior. If the interior element is loose, replace the cat. Sometimes you can actually see the interior elements moving around.

Yes, you can replace with the Jaguar OEM E$2000 cat. Aftermarket cats will vary in quality and back pressure (performance). Have no opinion on the cats you found, but urge you to check online with major exhaust mfgs and online reviews of performance cats. I replaced the cats on my '05 Cadillac CTS-V with performance cats (TPiS, Inc.), and then put 90K miles on the car with no problems - but no emission testing was required by my state.

Thank you all and Rey, as of today i emailed 2 places and no responses.
I prefer to find an atelier that will order it for me but it seems they are giving up.

I wait jag to call me this week and we will see, but yes I am convinced something is moving badly inside, but the cats works ok too bad. I am crazy about noise of all kind, we even changed the wheel nuts. And the atelier applyes some foam inisde ,all around the dashboard it was cranking too. I ' m lucky my dashboard leather is perfect, I applied some conditionner yesterday again, reading problems others experienced.

If you are considering a replacing the Jag with a newer one, will you buy from the dealer servicing the car? If so, I'd wait until new year and the 2010 comes down in price.

Have the dealership put the car on a lift and show you around. Tapping sounds like something is loose to me, but I don't know that much.

Hi Mosesbottbol and All.
so finally its is the exhaust silencer ( i knew it was this as it has been shown to me before, but then i mistaken it for a catlityc converter, you see , I am dumb )

To respond you, my car is french, and the dealership is in Spain, changing plates based on purchase price will cost me a fortune here like 3-4000 euros. And sadly the jags are cheaper in France than Spain, I found a 5 liters xkr2 12000km so its 8500 miles, 2010 , for 59000 euros, at jaguar Neuilly, they may take mine back at 34 or more. so this will be a good one, I am going to think at all posibilities, cause I need to spend 3500 euros on this 2008 who runs like a jewel too. For tires and silencer but again I could also keep the silencer as is as it s really when the road is real bad that I can hear a light tapping noise, and I could go with some Kumo tires for 1200 euros, so this will be it. Otherwise I will not hesitate to buy from them Grupo Iberica, they detailled each invoice, when they changed a part I got a copy printed of what was changed, last time I did not paid the front shocks, they also offered me a part at 500 euros donīt remember the name, to fix the facelift xj 2 years ago. From all places jaguars I know include Califonria south to north, and many french dealerships these guys are the best.

have a great week end all!
