XK 5.0 V8 / P0016 error code
Hi everybody! This summer I decided that I needed a car for my soul and hobby, I always really liked XK, so after a long search, in October, I found XK in really excellent condition!
38000km / Portfolio / looks like really new car, I'm the second owner. It was not used at winter time never before.
Later I decided to check service history more carefully, I noticed that the owner filled 5w30 instead of 5w20 in the last maintenance. As all we know this could be because of restrictions on the market. Soon the frosts began, and one day i did a mistake, on cold start I pushed gaz several time and made 4000-5000 rpm. So after that I got check engine error. I read the code and it was P0016 (crank-cam position correlation). I was very upset and was angry at myself. On next start or may be after two or three starts check engine error switched of by itself, i was really glad and the lesson was learned. But later one cold morning I started engine as usual, and after 1 minute I drove, the error lit up again (i didnot pushed the gaz more than 3000 rpm). So I connected OBD scanner and it showed me P0016 again. Than I found that 5W30 is too thick according to the tolerance for this engine and thought that when it is cold it goes harder in engine so the the sensor is triggered this error. I changed oil as it should be to 0w20. But still, for today, if I warm up the car for less than 4-5 minutes, the error appears again.
And if I'm getting the car from warm parking, without warming - no error. So the question is what to do next? Try to change this sensor? May be somebody faced with a similar problem?

its not the sensor, your timing chain is slacking up, the tensioners are driven by oil pressure,
I would take it to a jag shop and get your timing chain inspected, to do this properly the engine
must be turned over with covers removed to measure slack.
its highly unlikely to be the sensor.

Is it possible that chain ican be slacking on 40k km? Is there any other sympthoms of slaking chain problems can be? And I don't understand why this happens on cold star?
By the way I found the semiliar problem on XF forum: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...sition-113326/
Dealer "Said they have been hearing this a lot as the cold weather causes frost sometimes on sensors"

Yes its possible if the car was not maintained properly.
Cold start, the oil is thicker and cannot provide enough pressure to tighten the chain as it travels
through 1-2mm holes, if those holes become blocked the chain will not tighten.
I would still get it checked, and perform a oil flush and change at minimum.

guys…. its synthetic... I hope! The wrong grade, I’ll give you. But the “thickening” at these temperatures is significantly mitigated.
Nonetheless, wrong grade = ineffective lubrication.
I concur, I think you’ll find its the chain. Get it dealt with NOW. Ditto for the oil.
