Default XK Road Trip

Yesterday, we finished an 1800+ mile road trip in the 12xk. Jags of ETG retuned the car just as we took off. The trip consumed one week and our routing was LA - Las Vegas - North Rim Grand Canyon - Glen Canyon Dam - Lake Powell - Monument Valley - Chinle Reservation - Winslow AZ - Lake Havasu AZ - LA. During the course of our journey we confronted a dust storm on one of the two lane highways. Visibility got so bad that we had to stop. Following that we hit a torrential downpour that created at least 1 foot of standing water in the streets of Winslow AZ.

A good chunk of the driving was on two lane highways i"m not sure of the miles, but we took I-15 to St George UT. After that it was all two lane highways until we met up with I-40 and then went back and forth to old 66 where we could and then came back on I-40 and then I-15, etc., etc.

Statistics from the Jag's computer; round trip mile count 1815; average speed - all in: 61 mph; average mpg: 22.4. Top speed reached 105 mph - passing on a two lane highway. Overall I think not too shabby. Generally the trip was a joy as was the car, with one exception; the damned TPMS would intermittantly announce that it was not functioning and then anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours later it would go back to normal.

Hope to get some pix up later this week if I can figure out how to upload them. Final note; I don't think the finish on xk got damaged in the dust storm, but will find out for sure when it gets its bath (full detail job) on Thursday.

Wow, that sounds like a great road trip, Ralph. Beautiful country.

Last year I did the trip with my daughter from Calabasas to Palm Springs, Scottsdale, Sedona, Flagstaff and finally to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. I wanted to go to the Hoover Dam, but my 10 year old daughter was getting bored. We also experienced the earth quack at 6:00 am. Funny, she thought I was shaking the bed and when she found out it wasn't me she got really frightened. Something we'll never forget.

Would love to see some pictures.

Sounds like a great trip, hopefully some time with the top down. This is what the GT is made for.

Hi Ralph,
Welcome back, glad you had a good time and back safely. Let's get together soon.

DGL,
That little tremor from last year was just for fun. The January,1994 quake made the scene from the Exorcist where the bed was jumping up and down a foot or so off the ground look tame. That day will go down as the most frightening experience I will have ever had, especially knowing what I know about construction. It's a miracle more people weren't injured or killed. That little quake from last year was just a reminder.
