Default XK or XKR

.
I get about one speeding tickets a year on the LIE in my X Type. Will the high profile of a late XK attract more attention and tickets from cops?

In the next six months I am looking to buy a 2008, 9 or 10 XK/XKR coupe with low milage. Is there any special model or feature I should look for or avoid?

80% of my driving is highway. Is the R worth the extra gas and cost?

Thanks for all the info in your forum.

It has been said buy the best you can afford. I have owned a 96 XJR 6, 98 XJR 8 02 XJR 8 and 09 XKR. Each of the cars were great at the time. However the newer one was better than the previous one. The 8 cyl was more powerful than the 6 cyl, the 02 had updated suspension that drove nicer than the 98. The 09 XKR is better still. The specs say the 5.0 is more powerful than the 4.2l engine in my 09.

They are all wonderful cars. I count myself fortunate to drive any one of them. However each generation is a little more fulfilling than the previous one.

I think the thing that will get you more tickets is driving faster. I don't think there is a lot of difference between driving through a radar at 85 mph in a gremlin or an XKR. They look the same to the radar.

I hope you find one you love.

Another data point from someone who lives across the Hudson... I drive my XKR without a front plate (required in NJ) and have passed many, many local and state cop cars over the past year. If an XKR without front plates doesn't attract their attention then go ahead and buy what you like best.

I'd say buy a 5 liter non supercharged '10 XK. Has the power of the 4.2 liter XKR made prior to '10 and would have less stress on that engine than the earlier 4.2's.

Or the '10 or newer 5 liter XKR with a bunch more hp and bigger engine than the prior '10 Jags.

That said, I'm pleased as punch with my humble '07 XK without supercharger....for now anyway.

If I've mucked up the above, I'm sure somebody will straighten it out.

Are you looking nationally or locally? 5.0L car is worth going XK over older XKR IMO for similar money

FWIW, only the 2010+ XK has a true manual mode for the transmission. However, I'd still buy a pre 2010 XKR over a 2010+ XK.

Looking locally - USA.
Funny, I was going to do the exact opposite. I drove a 10 XK around the dealers streets and was not impressed with the acceleration on short streets. I am used to American car brute torque at low end. I thought a super charged 4.2 would give me a charge on the open road.

Love this forum.

Make no mistake, the 4.2 XKRs are quite fast!

Well, I guess you just answered your own question about whether an R is worth the extra gas and cost if you indeed want great gobs of glorious tire shredding low-end torque. The 5L XKR certainly has it in spades with brakes, suspension, limited slip diff and styling to match.

Buy the newest you can afford. Jaguar has made minor improvements each year, and many major ones for 2010+, which I think have been produced since around May 2009. Owners here absolutely love them all. Happy hunting!

as mentioned before, always try to buy the best and newest you can afford.

as far as the cops. maybe you should invest in a radar detector. the whole concept of "will my car stick out more than that car" i think is a paranoid myth....especially when its cars that look virtually the same (in this case XK vs XKR)

drive below the radar and you'll slip under the radar

I've been straightened out a bit on this. Since the pre 2010 XKR has 35 more hp than a non supercharged 2010 I can see why someone would buy the pre 2010 XKR over the just XK. Although the "just XK" 2010 and newer would probably do for me just fine.

Heck, I've had Prius doing 80mph pass me on I-40 'cause I was out of state and not wanting a ticket in a foriegn land (Ca).

He's referring to the fact that the pre-2010 models automatically upshift at redline. The 2010+ models don't do that if you're in dynamic-sport mode.

With extended warranty to 100K miles. I can drive for ten years in a 09 XKR or 10 XK
for the same price. Isn't 2010+ XKR overkill on US roads?

Absolutely...but you know that's part of its appeal, as is every other aspect of performance that improved as well. You were the one that said "I drove a 10 XK around the dealers streets and was not impressed with the acceleration on short streets. I am used to American car brute torque at low end. I thought a super charged 4.2 would give me a charge on the open road."

There's a larger power difference between a 4.2L and 5L XKR than going from a 5L XK to a 4.2L XKR.

You sound very capable of determining the level of performance you need and want so focus on driving your options and tell us what fills your needs.

Not only that, but the transmission will kick down if you mash the gas pedal and aren't in the lowest gear possible already, under certain conditions in "manual mode". From what I gather, this doesn't happen on the 5L models. Don't let this be a deal breaker, though. I've found that this never really comes into play in the real world, at least on the XKR.

On that note, saw a study and the most often color car pulled over is grey! I would gather because the shear numbers to red or more standout colors. No matter what color car you get, the xk or xkr always catch attention....one of the reasons I like owning mine...

Don't want to be pulled over - get an XJ instead. It was noted as the least ticketed car in USA along with Suburban.
