Default XK XKR automatic transmission question

I have noticed that in D and S, the car always reverts to 1st gear at stand still.
Is this a correct observation? If so, wonder why it does so, no need, well at least in D, 2nd gear would suffice just fine, much smoother of the spot, and most likely more fuel efficient... Or I am wrong here??

My 08 starts in 2nd unless I select 1st, both in D or S if using paddles.

If you go and find a nice long, quiet road and count the gear changes you will find that the gearbox starts in 1st in 'D'.

In manual mode it changes down as the revs drop but stops in 2nd.

Everyone with the exception of u102768 (and the OP) is wrong. Both D and S, when operated in the automatic mode, start in FIRST gear. It's sort of funny how many people have lambasted first gear as useless in manual mode, when in fact the car is using first gear on every start when it's in automatic mode!

When using the manual/paddle mode, coming to a stop (assuming you were in a gear higher than 1st) will only downshift into 1st gear if it is commanded to via the left paddle. Otherwise it will leave it in 2nd gear.

Hope this helps!

You are correct sir

Just spoke with my dealer. And they confirm that the box always reverts to 1st gear, in both S and D, only stays in 2nd if you are in S and shifting manually..

Petty I think... would have been so much better had it chosen 2nd in D, just like the ZF box in the 996 and 997 does..

Well just another reason to use the paddles...

If you have a 5.0, you can engage Winter mode:

The TCM changes the shift maps for the JaguarDrive control mode selected. This changes the shift points providing early or late upshifts and downshifts. For example, on slippery surfaces in winter mode the transmission will select 2nd gear for starting from a standstill on a flat surface to minimize wheel slip.
However, it also changes the power & torque settings for a given pedal position:

The EMS varies the accelerator pedal maps to change the amount of torque per percentage of pedal travel. The EMS can also change the accelerator pedal response to control the allowed torque change relative to the speed of pedal travel.
Each driving mode uses a combination of operating parameters for each sub-system… if the mode is changed from normal or dynamic to winter, the driver will notice a reduction in torque and engine speed
N.B. Winter mode is also informally known as 'chicken mode' - useful when allowing someone to drive who's never experienced something as powerful as an XK before. It isn't available on the 4.2.

Stormdk, while ZF transmissions are near ominipresent, they are not in the Porsches. They roll their own...

Are you sure?

Found this on the web

"Tiptronic was developed in conjunction by Porsche, ZF and Bosch. Porsche originated the idea, ZF made the gearbox and Bosch was responsible for the electronic control. Little had changed since its introduction :"

sounds accurate but I've never heard any Porsche mechanic refer to Tiptronic as a ZF transmission the way ZF is identified for Jag and now many others. ZF is dominant for good stuff repeatedly nowadays.

I don't like the way mine shifts from first to second when driving normally.. It's a little sluggish like the clutch pack is on it's last leg.. Anyone feel that? Not as crisp as 2nd - 3rd and so on

I think I feel that when the engine is cold. I think it's normal... doing a TCM reflash helped with this a little bit for me.

Might consider a TCM reflash and transmission oli change myself.

Car had semi harsh down changes between 2nd and 1st. But better now, but still not as smooth as I want it to be... Dealer saying that the transmission is getting use to my driving.. Well we will see....

I highly doubt our dealership here will even consider carrying out a transmission reflash!!
