XK8 driver here
Hey all you X150 drivers. So I have an XK8 coupe and love the car but I'm starting to feel the money I'm putting into the car is really starting to add up. This might be somewhat of an obvious question but If I was to save up a bit and get an XK would it be worth it? From my limited research the maintenance would be more expensive than my XK8 but at the same time less tempormental of a car than the aging XK8. Am I right? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Do the first year 07 models have any Strange issues? I would be looking for one in coupe form.

I would recommend doing a search as well, plenty of similar threads. As you can see in my sig below, I own an X100 and an X150. Now, granted, there are substantial differences between an 07 XK that you're considering and my 12 XKR-S.
However I can try and shed some light.
Powertrain:
I'm not sure what year your XK8 is, but I'm assuming an earlier 4.0L car. As you probably know there were some important upgrades made to the 4.2L that you'll find in 2007-2009 XKs (and 2003+ X100s). Most notably, no issues with the secondary tensioners and no Nikasil problems. The 4.2L is a very strong motor. Assuming again you have an earlier car, you have the ZF 5HP24 5 speed. ZF 6HP26 6 speed is a good upgrade. Believe its less troublesome than the early 5 speeds but not sure.
Driving Characteristics:
The X150 is a harsher ride than the X100- but again thats comparing an XKR to an XKR-S. I've never driven the naturally aspirated versions of either an X100 or X150. My XKR-S has the s/c 5.0, which has much more low end torque than the s/c 4.2L did, so around town at low RPMs the XKR-S feels a lot more powerful, but again not that relevant for you. Overall driving dynamics, the X150 is a noticeable improvement over the X100- more composed, less body roll, better brakes, better acceleration, smoother shifts, etc. etc.
Interior:
Obviously interior is more updated in the X150. Much better infotainment (if that matters to you). More features, etc. I think the X100 is more classy inside, however. Really depends on your taste.
Maintenance Costs and Problems:
Common issues with the early X150s include water pump failure and also an issue with the drain for the A/C that can cause dampness/water egress into the passenger compartment. Those are the two I'm aware of. Perhaps someone with an early X150 can add more. X150s have more electrical gremlins than X100s.
This thread may be of interest to you as well: Example of cost to maintain an X150 over the years:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-miles-161580/
Something else to keep in mind (as evidenced by the above thread) is that a 2007 X150 is still a 10 year old car. While overall the X150 is a more advanced car technologically than the X100, at 10 years old there are things that wear out with age (as on any car).
On a personal level, I don't have enough data to compare my maintenance costs. I owned a 2005 XK8 for 3 years and I've owned my 2006 XKR for 1 year. Over those 4 years, and 2 cars, I've never had anything break. Most expensive item for me has been tires and brakes. For my XKR-S, I've only put less than 10k miles on since I bought it last year. Nothing has broken so far! But that isn't saying much.
Conclusion: If I had to pick one over the other, it would be the X150. Simply a better car when taking all of the above into account. Like K. Westra said, however, I do think the X100 is more classically beautiful than the X150; X150 is more muscular. Will a 2007 XK be cheaper to maintain than an early XK8? Kind of a crapshoot. Really depends how well the X150 was maintained by the PO.
Hopefully that helped some. Feel free to ask any more specific questions

I had an xk100 the xkr for 6 years before my 2007, never gave me any bad trouble, battery and a door module in 6 years. Then just service parts. Loved the car, only reason for changing was just to get into the newer xk150. But the cars a to totally different beasts. The xk150 is just so modern compared to the older one in looks, drive and interior. As for maintenance , i have it 2 years now and a new battery, alarm box, MAF sensors and one of the cats went, all needed to be done due to failure. Servicing was as with the old car, prices of maintenance parts around the same.
The xk150 has a lot of electric issues compared to the old xk100, due to battery and starting issues and such gremlins that are there one day and then disappear.
But i can't fault the car really, every time i look and drive it brings a big smile to my face. If you go for one you'll not be disappointed.

The amount of people willing to give there insight and advice on this forum never ceases to amaze me! Thanks for all the information guys. I was just curious about the x150 because i am aware my car is aging (yes it's an earlier model "2000") and it is my daily driver. Ideally I would want to keep the car and eventually purchase a X150 as my "new" daily. Again thanks for all the insight!

I have both as well. a 2002 XKR convertible and a 2010 XKR coupe. My 2002 took me til about 120,000 miles before it became a very reliable car. It went through every one of the known issues and cost me more than I paid for the car originally but now at 160,000 miles is a smooth running, reliable, relatively maintenance free car. I love it for its classic, sensual, look, its obvious ties to the XKE, its rich interior burl wood and leather. It's a great cruiser so long as the roads are smooth, have no dips or humps where even the slightest provocation sets the front end shaking like a bowl of jello. But, it's more beautiful than the X150 in my opinion.
My 2010 XKR, what can you say? The X150 platform is so far superior to the X100's that it's just an unfair comparison. Suspension and handling characteristics are phenomenal, tight as a drum, shock absorber dampening that you could only dream about in the X100 (but never actually experience). The 4.2L engine of the 2007-2009 is well tested and thoroughly reliable from the last years of the X100 forward to the X150. The 5.0L is also pretty rock solid. The X150 is a more modern, highly improved successor to the X100 with an interior that while more modern and more comfortable doesn't quite have the classic feel of the earlier cars. You love the X150 for its athleticism, its ability to do everything well, effortlessly, its muscularity.
Known issues as others have mentioned are not related to engine problems but things like clogged air conditioning drainage lines, water pumps and thermostat housings, leather shrinkage on the dash, and battery strength. These are very reliable automobiles.
Good luck.

One interesting design tidbit is the availably of the Poplar wood trim on the very early X150s (maybe only 2007-2008). Its love it or hate it, but I really like it personally and its unique to the early cars. If you're fond of it, keep your eyes peeled in your search.

Absolutely LOVED my XK8. Gorgeous car. It was just too slow for me, and a bit too small in the driver seat (I'm 6'-2"). Now with the 2010 XKR, not a problem. The X150s are not near as 'pretty' a car, but they absolutely blow the X100s away with the improvements. It's like a biplane compared to an F-16.
Still miss the 8 though.

Hello Neighbor, I am also in NJ. If you want to come by and see my 2007 xk send me a note. I will be happy to go over it with you. My 2007 British Racing Green xk coupe has over 100k miles and it looks and runs excellent. I also believe that is the only year you can get a steering wheel with wood. My advice would be not to limit yourself to buying one local. I bought mine from Sarasota Florida and had it shipped to me and I am so glad that I did that. I got exactly the year, color and options that I wanted. I suggest that you budget yourself for at least 20K to get a really nice example. Overall these cars are the best bang for the buck as far as I am concerned.
