I arrived home yesterday after a 40 mile drive and noticed my front grill badge was missing. Has anyone had any experience of purchasing and refitting the badge. A Quick Look under the bonnet suggests that there is quite a bit of bodywork removal required to get to the back of the grill!
Yes. And yes.
If you remove the nose of the car, it is all very easily accessed. While you are at it, step into the parts department and evaluate the different emblem options. I did and chose the emblem that best matched the centre caps on the wheels.
The body shop would have the job done in less than 2 hours. It takes me longer as I’m meticulous about the fit then start finding other issues to be dealt with.
I have no idea what car you have. As they get up in age I’m constantly switching out the old plastic connectors as they crack and break easily. Have some spares ready.
It's not difficult to remove the nose but just takes a bit of time. Check that your grill is firmly fixed in place as, if it's like the XK, it's only held with clips, something like 11 if I remember correctly, in total. If some are missing or badly rusted, now would be the best time to replace them.
Mine was missing today and as I was at a european car show , I'm assuming it was knicked and didn't just coincidentally fall off. SIgh.
I can see wehre it looks like you could just press and stick one with adhesive, but screws would be better to deter another thief. (of course a thief might do more damage with a screwdriver if it's actually not coming off easily too)
Do I need an 'emblem' replacement that has a bezel around it or just one of the badges from ebay that seem tor un about 30-40$? I'm super frustrated right now as I don't think i can get the same exact growler, so it will change hte look a little bit.
argh.
It appears to be about 86mm which is what I've been browsing on ebay. They come with adhesive backing which seems the simplest approach. however, QUESTION - I've also seen quite a few that had the 2 posts horizontally when you are looking at the cat's face...the holes in my grill are vertical.
Does this indicate the back/bezel some holder of the badge should spin, or do you need to get one without theose horizontal plastic guide posts in this case?
EDIT, AHA - i see Paul did address this later in the Life on Cars video, phew, I was really wondering if the standard replacement badges I'm seeing weren't standard for my year or something.
This is what I'm looking at now and what it was. Sigh. it's all well and good to change the character of the car when you want to, but having someone else **** it up and make me do that ruined my sunday.
Appreciate any input if you've done this and hopefully it's just a simple $30 part and some adhesive and I will have to live with the little growler's appearance becoming a bit cheaper, going to match the whee caps it looks like.
