Default Fuel gauge on XK150

Hi
The fuel gauge on my XK150 always jumps to full when I switch on and the red fuel low warning light also comes on. I tend to ignore these as I dip the tank and always carry a spare can in the boot….but it is something I want to correct.
Can anybody offer suggestions?
Thanks for your inputs
Cheers
Mike

I don't have an XK series sports car, but I did notice your car as 1957 build.
That was at the same time as MK1 sedans were manufactured i.e. 1955 to 1959.
i have owned about 5 of these MK1cars and a similar number of MK2s.
One Mk1 I acquired had a similar problem to yours with the fuel gauge going to full with the low fuel warning light on.
It turned out that somebody had put a MK2 fuel transmitter in place of the MK1.
Although they look similar the MK2 fuel gauge operating system is quite different to the MK1.
I would start by disconnecting the fuel gauge transmitter and ensuring the gauge sits at zero and the light is out with power on.
Then try to identify what transmitter is actually in your car.

Thanks for this. I will give this a go. How do you identify whether it is a mk1 or mk2 fuel transmitter?
Cheers

I have had a look at the fuel gauge transmitter as displayed in the SNG Barrat parts system.
It is different to the MK1/2 system where the transmitter is on top of the tank.
Yours is on the side of the tank.
Lets not rush into this fault finding.
Did you disconnect the wires to the transmitter as the first step?
Cheers

Not yet! I went to the garage this morning and retreated fairly quickly as the temperature in there is quite cold at the moment!
I am away next week so will have to leave it for a couple of weeks.
I have the SNG catalogue so will take a look at that
RThanks again
Mike

I have had exactly the opposite problem. Temperature was 35C and I had to fit a new in tank electric pump in a family vehicle.
Work for 10 minutes and retreat to a fan for 10 minutes Took an hour to do a 30 minute job.
The XK150 fuel transmitter part no appears to be C8407.
cheers

LOL. That would be even worse I think. I will order a new sender and float unit. Not bad at Ł85.
Thanks for your help

I finally got around to fitting the new sender unit got my XK150. Hey presto works perfectly. Found the old float unit was full of petrol, so i guess i could have just changed that!
