Hi all,
I'm just about to bring a '54 XK-120 OTS home.
It doesn't run and I need to pull it up my somewhat steep driveway into my garage.
I have a winch in the garage that is strong enough to do the job, but I could use some help in figuring out where/how on the car to hook in.
Ideally I want to pull it in backwards so the front is facing out, but if it is easier to find a place in front I can pull it that way too.
The winch has a metal hook on the end of the wire, but I guess I could get one of those yellow tow straps if that's better?
Are the rear bumpers strong enough to pull the car up a short 20 degree slope, or should I look for a different place to hook?
Thanks for any advice!
Chris
As soon as I get it home I'm sure I will be a frequent poster.
This car was my mother in laws daily driver until something broke in 84 and it was put in a barn for the rats to feast on.
Somewhere along the way the radiator and the distributor was taken out and lost, but the rest should be there and original.
They can't recall what was wrong with it at the time, but even though my skills may be lacking, I am pretty set on getting this thing to run.
However, first things first - how do I get it into my garage!?
Here is is after a first rough cleaning.
I would NOT drag the car using front or rear bumpers ! It is a car that has a separate chassis, so you need to locate a suitable place front or rear on that. At the rear you could use the rear spring shackle to tie round, and as the front there is a chassis cross member. However, using the bumper orons may be OK , but a lot depends on how steep is your driveway.
Thanks Fraser,
Part of my problem is that I'd like to figure this out before getting a truck to bring the car here, and I only have some photos and my vague memory to refer to about where to grab it. Once it is here if I don't get it into the garage right away it'll sit on the street and I'd like to avoid that.
When I last looked at the car underneath in the back there seem to be some sort of cover so it's all flat and I didn't see anything obvious I could use - but it is in a tight place and difficult to get in there now.
Here is the driveway I'm up against, fwiw:
It's not very long, but perhaps 20 degree slope at the steepest. Maybe the truck can back up a bit on the slope so we can roll it into the garage directly off the truck. I might just give it a shot this weekend and see what happens.
Yay, made it home. My tow driver was a total pro and deposited the car without any issues.
Now the fun begins! Spent the day doing a rough cleaning it inside and out, now I'm starting to clean the engine compartment.
Could take a bit of time...
