$457 to replace a front wheel bearing on a 97 XK8, does that seem fair?

If you do a search on the subject, you'll find that it can take several hours, so as much as it hurts, we just have to live with it.

Had to have hub & bearing replaced last yr when wheel stud was stripped by tire mechanic. It was $998.50. The bearing was $94.11 labor was $267.30.
Glad I didn't have to pay for it.

and that is why i have spare studs taken out from old hubs i replace. That way i can just charge a customer a small amount to pull in a new stud. And to the op yes thats about right. Just hope the hub isnt eaten into by the bearing as youll have to replace that too then. Then i take the old hubs, weld to pipe, get some spare wheel nuts, and center cap and hang old Jaguar wheels from them cemeted into the ground for garden hose hangers. some of the nicest, most expensive hose hangers youll findOriginally Posted by mromanik

Ok, ended up the rear hub needed replacing too. Changed 2 headlight bulbs rear hub and bearing. Total was $1050.
I'm thinking a dealership wouldn't have even charged as much....

#1: Get a Ford Windstar bearing. Same thing, 1/5 the price.
#2: Hard work but can be done in house. I used a mechanic. I bought the necessary tool.

It's not easy to toss old hub put a new bearing in a new hub and charge $870 for it?Originally Posted by chopr
Not the easiest of jobs. Price sounds pretty fair to me, figuring around $100/hr labor these days (if not more...)

It sounds fair, I am a tech for a living, I hear horror stories on what shops charge everyday. I also changed both my front bearings last year, parts were $140, it took over 2 hours, busted knuckles, an improvised abs ring tool, many swear words and a sense of a job well done at the end of it!!

You do all your work at the 'office' or do you maintain your own press and other large manly tools in your garage?Originally Posted by Jen & Neil
