Default £2,000 ($3k) to spend, but what on...

Just ONE poxy number off winning the Lottery a couple of weeks ago (and a share of £2.3m / $3m with 2 others), but did bag a couple of grand for my troubles. Mrs Redeye's agreed it can be used on the XK, but on what?

Tyres are all good, service up to date, brakes all good too and everything works (touch wood!); its basically got everything i want already there. Options for me could be:

1. upgraded exhaust system (but not too bothered)
2. upgrade the supercharger (but not too fussed)
3. replace all the bushes (just in case)
4. upgrade tail lights (but fairly happy with current)
5. take a few mates on holiday to the Mediterranean! (ok thats not on the Jag but its tempting...)

What d'you reckon?

Congrats on the win!

I'd go for option 1 AND 5.

I've got an Adamesh sports exhaust - haven't used the stereo since fitting it - the V8 growl is so addictive. It only cost £400, is nice quality and will leave enough left over for a few sangria's on the beach.

I would set it aside in an interest-bearing account as your XKR maintenance fund. If you're a DIY type of guy and you keep the car long enough, that money could last quite awhile....

Ditto what JON89 said.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Save the money cause it WILL break sooner or later .

BTW you may want to do something nice for Mrs Redeye. She sounds like a treasure.

Agree with not throwing money at it just for the sake of it.

However, if you're determined to spend then full rebushing and shocks all round makes an amazing difference to handling and ride quality.

What, lowering the shocks from std or simply replacing? She had both rears replaced last summer as part of the MOT, but fronts are both original and in good nick from last inspection a couple weeks back. Rebushing and checking/replacing bearings sounds a gound idea tho. Quite happy to keep the dosh in the bank but as i've got the green light don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth!

ps: for those that remember, had needed to sell the XK a few months back but have ridden the storm and come thru without needing to part company (thank goodness).

Okay, until I read that I was going to vote for bushes etc too, particularly if the need is there. But now I agree with setting the money aside in a place you won't fritter it away. Storms big and small do come along now and then. Congrats on your win anyway. PS Where in the Mediterranean?

Some very sensible suggestions ..... but you only live once, its too short, and you won the money anyway, so what would you rather - drive around in a shouty car telling sories of drunken debauchery on the Med with free money - or tell everyone how sensible you were in saving the money for when your bushes eventually go.

Old saying - live fast die young, live slow die bored.

Distilling the answers so far, including your own suggestions, I believe you have three choices:
  • Smart,
  • Practical, or
  • Fun
As the old saying goes, "Pick two".

The best way to do that is to take Mrs. Redeye on holiday. It will be fun and definitely will be smart (trust me, I've been married 30 years).

But if you want to end the stress of all this, send the money to me. I will make sure it is put to good use on a very deserving Jag, who will always think well of her Uncle Redeye. Of course I will reimburse you for the lottery ticket cost so that you end up even.

I would get a good warranty on the car, no big worries for 3 or 4 years.
