Default '03 HID Headlight Blues

My right headlight (low beam) was out.
So I ordered a pair of HID replacement bulbs.
While I was waiting to change them out, the left one went out as well.

OK...
I pulled the left side apart - the headlight was a different one than what I ordered. But the right side was exactly right. So I discovered that someone changed out the left side assembly. sigh...

Anyway, I went out and got the correct bulb for that side. Now I've replaced the low beam bulbs on each side.

They still don't come on.
Both fuses are good.

Suggestions?

Do any of the lights come on as controlled by the stalk? Parking? Brights?

You can use a multimeter to see if there is juice going to assembly.

hopefully the ballast is ok :/ On japanese cars sometimes they're part of the headlight and sometimes not... I'm not totally familiar with the Jaguar headlights but if the bulbs don't work it could be the ballast ... (I hope not.. I used to make Infiniti owners cry when I told them the prices...)

Hope it's something simple..

The 03 Ballast is a Valeo LAD5G. About $200 each.

All of the other lights come on. Just not these two.
How would I know if it's the ballast?

Are both d1s HIDs? What was the other unit? I'm not a ballast expert but with two potentially bad ones, I'd see if the cable off the ballast has juice (both sides).

not to put more fear into you kesslari - but when I was working at infiniti - sometimes owners would buy a bulb and swap it out and didn't work because the ballast was bad.. but *sometimes* the bad ballast would blow out the bulb... so the owner had to buy another ballast and a new bulb on top of it.. (expensive things..). I guess you could try the new bulb in the left headlight and see if it comes on..

Anyway I'm not sure how you test a ballast/bulb but that would be weird having both fail at the same time... maybe a harness got burned or damaged somehow leading up to the lights..? :/

Kesslari,

Both of the replacement bulbs should be #D1S Bulbs.....Should look like a little square box lying on its side with the bulb sticking straight up......the cable plugs into the side....the cable comes from the Ballast.....Normally it last forever but if it's out you can get new ones from HIDNation for $99.00 each the Bulbs are $69.95 a pair.....This is what came in the car....

What ballast does HIDNation have for our cars? I couldn't find a LAD5G (12 wire).

Thanks!

Billy,
They both *should* be #DS1. The right side still is. Someone changed the fittings on the left side so it takes a DS2. I'm guessing that the car had an accident that was not disclosed. Seems odd that both ballasts would go bad, but guess I'll find out.

Its possible someone changed the ballast and connector vs the entire assembly. It's also possible the assembly is from a later model year (but I don't know if there were differences in the HID runs) or maybe someone put a non-HID assembly in and converted it? The original ballast may have gone and the PO decided to upgrade/change it due to availability/cost. Just some feasible thoughts, IMO.

The really only way to know would be take pics of the Ballast and Cables with connectors and see what we got.

Best,
dsd

Lightbulb

Kesslari,

The HID Bulbs that go in the 2003 Jaguar XK or XKR is a D1S not a DS1...with that out of the way....You can go right now to Amazon and put in Valeo LAD5G OEM Ballast and this page comes up with a picture of one. It should look like yours should. Although it will also fit a Volvo, Chrysler 300 and several other cars for $87.00. If you look around on that page, you will be able to find a Ballast, a Cable and a Bulb for $144.48 but if you keep on looking they have even better deals....While you are replacing the Bulb and the Ballast, you might as well replace the Cable connector....2 for less than $10 bucks! What a deal.........

Be careful as the LAD5G is different from the LAD5GL. 12 pin vs 4 pin I believe.

Only way I know to test a hid bulb is to plug into a known good, compatible ballast.
