06 XK8 Gas Smell Inside When Cold Start
Hey Guys,
I did a little searching first on Xk8 and gas smell. But mine seems a little different.
When I cold start the car after the car has warmed up I get a smell of gas inside the car. By the time the engine temp gauge gets to normal operating temp the smell goes away.
If I drive the car on/off the remainder of the day the smell is gone.
Next time I start the car cold - boom a few minutes after running the smell comes back, and then goes away.
I have lifted the hood several times, and don't smell the gas outside the car of under the hood.
Thoughts......
Thanks,
Dave B

Pull the cover off the engine. Leave the hood up then start it like you do when you smell the gas then go back to the motor and smell around the fuel injection rails.
My 03 did a similar thing, turned out one of the pulsation dampeners was leaking at start up. Got to get down in the motor and sniff around see if it is in there on either side of the motor. If not there perhaps emissions? Getting any check lights?

I took the car to my trusty mechanic and he immediately said it was the Fuel Purge Valve inside the front driver fender wall. He had the car for 3 weeks trying to get the part. They kept sending a Jag part, and my car (late 2006) used a Denso Part from Japan (i may have those 2 pieces reversed) but they sent the wrong part for the car 8 times.
He finally got the right part and put it in the car. Immediately the check engine light came on. He reset the check engine light, but then it came back on when I restarted the car. And there was still the gas smell on a cold start up.
I took the car back to him, and he put the original fuel purge filter back in the car, and the check engine light went away, but the cold start the gas fumes are still there and seem to be getting worse.
So now have to take the car back to the mechanic. I will mention the fuel rail, any other directions I should point him towards?

the leaking Dampener is hard to catch if you are not looking for it. Mine did not spray gas all over, it was just a small leak on the pass side dampener. Mine did the same thing your car did when cold. On my 03 there is one on each fuel rail between the 2nd and 3rd injectors. Fire it up when cold (engine cover off) and jump out and look at them, look at the whole rail.
