Default '06 XKR loping idle?

I have had a 2006 XKR for 18 months, purchased with 41k miles now has 45k miles. I am requesting some ideas on where to start diagnosing a problem that just occurred. I started the car the other day and noticed some smoke at startup; the car ran fine with no other problems that day. The next time I started it, yesterday, I noticed a clicking sound at idle that I had not heard before. I checked under hood, heard but could not locate the noise, shut off the engine, checked oil and added 1/2 quart, and restarted. No more clicking noise, but engine lopes or shakes at idle. Shut off and restart produced same loping idle. I did not drive the car.

So, if you were me, where would you start? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Moseley

First thing to do is to check for any pending fault codes. If you do not have an OBDII code reader, go to Autozone or Advance Auto and they will read the codes for free.

Be sure to note down the code numbers (P####), as the descriptions from a non-Jaguar code reader may not be correct . Post the results here.

next time you hear the clicking open the driver door and see if it is coming from that side of the car back of the motor. There is an emissions device there, I know my 03 clicks from that area at times.

So I get to wear the Dunce Hat today- opened the hood to listen prior to leaving for code check.
I left the oil cap off.
Replaced the oil cap and idle returned to normal. A pressure thing, I suppose?
Sometimes it's just the simple things...

Thanks to all!

I had a Mini Cooper, if ya took the oil cap off while it was running it pretty much shut off.

The crankcase breather is plumbed into the intake manifold so leaving the cap off (or even pulling out the dipstick) creates a vacuum leak.

You'll notice that all those caps and plugs have a rubber o-ring on them to ensure a good seal.
