Default 1996 xk8 stuck in park

Hello good Jaguar folk
I have just completed an oil change to the transmission this morning and all went well until it came time to change the gears.
I had the centre consol apart so I was able to change gears manually overiding the lock. Some would insert a screwdriver into the plastic torx slot on top of the gear selector to give you an idea as to how I was able to overide the lock.
Anyhow, this still leaves me with a locked selector. When I step on the brake to move out of park I don't hear a click. Me thinks I should hear a click from the selector yes or no? Solinoid issue here maybe?
The brake lights are working as are all the interior and door lights.
When I shut the engine off in park it also makes that rapid beeping warning noise like when you try to change gears without stepping on the brake. Any ideas would be most appreciated and thanks in advance.

The NOT IN PARK microswitch lever is broken or the switch is not positioned correctly?

Cheers. I did think to check the park micro switch lever and it wasn't broken. I will check it again tomorrow to see if the button that the lever contacts is struck in.
Update. The lever for park is fine although the nuetral lever is and has been broken for some time.
I have now ruled out the brake switch as the brake lights work as does the cruise control which which somehow are meant to be connected.
