Bob Roy; On my 4.2 the oil pan leak turned out to be the oil filter adapter o ring gasket where it attaches to the front of block, easy enough to change. Mimics oil pan leak.

I hope I am posting in the correct place but saw oil leaks and '97 xk8 so thought I'd give it a try. I also had some oil leaks and seepage, one severe and had rear crankshaft seal replaced a couple weeks ago, no more pouring leaks but still have one little one (couple drips) near the starter and of course hitting the exhaust system making that smell. I got under and took the attached picture; anyone had this leak experience ?

Small oil drip near starter '97 xk8.

Hmm. If you had a rear crank leak and it was going on a while, it could be that the oil you are seeing is residual,,, left over from the crank seal issue. Oil is strange after a leak, especially a fairly major one.. It will seem to keep showing up in places until it just doesn't anymore. The starter motor, the geared end, lives in direct proximity to the rear seal, in the bell housing space. One WOULD think that whoever did your rear seal might have cleaned all the oil they could up,,, but who knows, during the leaky days oil could have found places to pool inside of the starter motor itself. Not impossible...

I would wipe it down and keep an eye on it....to start.

Thanks...I did think of that after reading some posts regarding oil leaking from starter that related that leak to rear main crankshaft. Anyway its been about 350 miles since the replacement and no leaking or pouring oil as prior to the rear main replacement. As far as the repair facility cleaning probably cause of Covid they didn't clean, lol.

While the cars have a lot in common, and there are a lot of helpful members here, you should probably post on the X150 forum. This is the X100 1996-2006 forum.

Is now a good time to bring up the oil-overfilling debate/can of worms?!

My impression that the oil capacity was underestimated originally and that, on an early car with an original dipstick, it’s actually preferably to read a quart over full?!

Since we are talking about finding and solving leaks, and I have been scouring the forum and web and have not found the correct issue, maybe y'all can help me with my leak that went from small to a ball-busting quick drainage of my power steering fluid. It is NOT that odd connector on the passenger side going from rack up through the bizarre PS cooler and back to the to the reservoir....as far as I can tell.

The once-small leak that turned heavy after adding that much-ballyhood LUCAS "leak stopping" additive seems to be coming from the pump. I can't see oil on the low pressure hose from the reservoir to the rack line. But the high pressure line has oil on almost all of it. My son has crawled all around the area and says it seems to be coming from the pump seal. OF COURSE! The hardest thing to replace!

As it sits (and has been sitting since my one hour drive after replacing that damn ABS module) I cannot even drive it to a shop because the fluid comes out so fast.

I trust Bobroy and would like to get it into his hands, even if it means a tow. It's just too big a job for me or my son.

If someone who has had experience with this problem, and has repaired it, I'd like to see it. WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOME PICS!
