1997 XK8 warm start issue
Hello fellow Jag owners,
Hopefully you can help with my latest conundrum.... My 1997 XK8 has a warm start issue, if I drive the car for more than 45 min to an hour and stop, it wont start back up until it cools down (30-45 min). It will crank and crank for days but will not turn over. Fuel pressure tester on the fuel rail is 42-45, battery is new, replaced ecm with a spare I had from a previous '97 XK8 i had. codes pulled from my OBDII p1000 p1797 (which from my research don't really apply to this issue). I have read that this symptom can sometimes be attributed to a faulty cam position sensor, Is this likely? I hate to just start throwing parts at a problem unless i'm confident it will solve the issue.
Also, if the cam sensor is the culprit, it looks easy enough to replace. but is it under the throttle body or the coolant filler/reservoir?
I have just recently become aware of the "Nikasil" effect. is my problem one that can be attributed to this particular "N" engine? I have owned a late '97 and a '98 and the past with very few issues, this one seems to be so much more quirky.
Thank you in advance for any help given,
~Mitch

The P1797 relates to a gearbox issue. I am wondering if it is not related to your start problem. I wonder if the TCM is seeing an overheating problem and telling the ECM shut down. Have you ever serviced the transmission fluid/filter. It may be that you are low on fluid and are overheating the fluid that is there, or possibly the trans cooler is blocked, possibly by road debris.
I would doubt a cam sensor sense it seems to be temp related.

Thanks Avern
Thanks for your reply Avern,
I purchased this car about 4 months ago with this issue. The trans was rebuilt 20k miles ago (documented) , and even knowing that I changed the trans filter and fluid the week I got it (better to overservice than replace) so no issues there. could the 1797 be showing up from a previous issue that has since been fixed? because I have no noticeable issues with the trans.
Also, engine never overheats, that is to say the temp gauge never gets above normal.
