Hi Guys,

I have a nice little crack starting bottom left corner of my windshield. Don't even know how she started but I decided to replace the windshield and am calling around for best prices. Heck it has 18 years of wear on it anyway.

For those who face this in the future, there are 4 different windshields in these cars: Plain tinted; Heated; Rain Sensor; Heated with Rain Sensor.

FYHI: I am getting quotes from $225 to $360 for the plain tinted windshield.

Here's the issue: two or three places looked this up and said "I'm sorry this car requires an in-house installation", we only have mobile.

When I quizzed one of them about this they explained that for some reason, maybe complexity, or length of time involved, it can't be done mobile.

Does anyone know if this is true? Have any of you had your windshields replaced by mobile technicians? Guess I'm trying to find out if it can't be done, it shouldn't be done, or it can be done by an installer in my driveway.

This suprised me, especially becuase the dozen or so other places are ready to drive out and replace it tomorrow if I say Go.

if you have a heated/rain sensor one you will pay a lot more and will have to take it to the shop.

 

I replaced mine, with the rain sensor. If I remember, I might be wrong, it's been awhile, but the rain sensor plugs in up by the mirror, I would imagine the heater windshield also plugs in. It wasn't hard to replace you want two people, you have to clean the windshield frame and remove all of the old glue, We had two of the window suction cup tools. That made the job easier to center and set in the frame. I bought a jaguar windshield, I wanted to keep it close to original. cost was $700.00 Those companies may have run into trouble with the trim clips. The hardest part is the trim clips, many times it has been glued in by another technician. Getting them out can be a long ordeal you have to cut them out very carefully. you'll have to set trim clips in after you set the windshield, then install the trim.

 

Doug, did they do it "mobile" or did you have to visit the shop and leave it? Thanks for the warning about trim clips. That would explain why one dealer quizzed me 2 or 3 times: Is there anything else you need? Anything wrong with the window besides the crack? He came in at $265, I may push the button since his partner has an xk8 and he did the job 2 times already.

Hi I have had my heated front screen replaced twice due to stone chips, the company came to me but I'm in the UK. £60 excess on the insurance bargain.

 

haven't had to yet but thankfully windshield replacement is free in SC through auto insurance

I did it myself, I use to own a auto collision repair facility, still have most of my tools. I'm thinking the reason some of the installers won't do it mobile, is because of the trim. if you don't know what your doing you can screw it up. I've seen trim installed by gluing and not using the clips. which makes it much harder the next time around. See if your window is the triple XXX that's the Jag's original glass. That's a good sign that it's the original which would make it a easier install. $265.00 seems low to me also.
