That's why no one at the dealer would talk to me but the young service tech who was no help other than to say they had no idea or way to figure it out. This isn't the first thing in my life that no one could figure out and I had to on my own, but I'm hoping to get help here. It has had this soon after I got the car, though not quite so loud, it's not really as loud as the recording makes it out to be, but every time I asked a question about it here everyone just said replace the timing tensioners. Then it developed the other noise so I took it in and they replace ALL the chains and tensioners, but alas the cold knock was still there.
It goes away so enough and you only hear it while backing out of the garage. Then everything is fine until the next cold start, usually the next day.
We'll see what rnrmusic comes up with.
Come on it's just a Ford engine, there's a million of them out there. Somebody must have an idea!

Hmmm, try this...buy a few oil filters from the dealer...you'll pay about $15 each, and there's a chance that the filters you may be using do not have a check valve in it, and all of the oil is draining out of the motor on shutdown.

You could also try the next heaviest weight oil.

Are you sure it's not supercharger related? Have you changed the oil in your SC? There is usually little, or no oil in them after many years of running.

what about the intercooler pump under the supercharger? Does it make that kind of racket?

I've got tractors quieter than that !!
Matt, it seems to occur at engine rpm rather than S/C and goes on so long - wouldn't the oil have got through by then even if the filter was duff?
What does a sticky valve sound like?

I know it's quit disheartening but it goes away so soon you really can't get a handle on it. As far as the SC is concerned, yes I checked the oil, full, and if it was the coupling between the pulley shaft and the vanes it would rattle all the time, plus the dealer disconnected the SC belt and it was still there. The funny thing to me is how much loader and more pronounced it gets while in gear, forward or reverse. That's why it took me so long to really get to hear it, I had to get someone to my house to hold the brake and put it in gear, when it's just idling in neutral it's hard to hear. Listen to the video when I first start it (yes I need the check valve installed in the fuel line) and then when I put it in neutral between Rev and Drive about half way through the video, just a little tappet noise. When I put it in gear and load on the engine is when things really get loud but as your drive off and raise RPM’s it pretty much goes away. The dealer said when they raised the car the sound sounded like it came from below the engine too. When above the engine it sound like it's coming from the SC.
I need some of the high tech listen equipment that can pin point a gunshot location in Detroit.

sorry, I'm at a loss to explain it. A fresh perspective from another vet mechanic would be my next course of action.

Looking at your video, I notice your knock goes away when the engine torques up and moves slightly. Might be something in the motor mounts resonating through metal on metal? Just an observation on my part. Best of luck on your quest.

That's actually when the torque is removed from the engine that it quiets down. When it's loud is when it's in Reverse or Drive, of course the engine torques in the same direction for both. Maybe it has something to do with the engine torquing over. I heard a exhaust leak once that sounded very metallic.

Of course I can't find the post but Brutal or another Teccy reckoned it was some part between the engine and transmission which made this noise.
I've spent half an hour on Google and not turned it up.
Maybe Someone Who Knows will come along !

well it wasnt what i was expecting and thats good. He has worked on Jaguars and European cars for over 30 years so I go with what he says. He told me that the sound is because of normal wear and tear. What with me having over 150,000 miles on it and it goes away after warmup. he said it has Lifter and Timing Chain rattle, nothing to be highly concerned over , its due to Oil pressure taking longer to build.He said to use WIX oil filters and use 10-30 weight oil. So I will try that and if it helps with the ticking I'll let you know. He KNOWs about tensioners very well and said it wasn't them.

Thats the real question. Have they been changed. 30 years experience should of ask the same thing. I'm so glad I looked at and changed mine. I had to be kicked into it to. I did not want to do mine. When I did was I surprised. The tensioners were falling apart. Changed them and she purrs like a cat.
